President Obama is poised to issue a very damaging Executive Order that will repeal an important pro-life measure that has barred the use of federal funds by non-governmental agencies abroad for abortions and abortion counseling.

President Obamas expected action to repeal the policy could come on the 36th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion.

The policy is known as the Mexico City Policy and requires any non-governmental organization to agree before receiving U.S. funds that they will neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations.

We have produced a detailed legal memorandum outlining the importance of this measure and what's at stake by repealing it.

You can read our memo here.

As we conclude in our memo:  "The Mexico City Policy is absolutely crucial to preventing American taxpayer dollars for the performance and promotion of abortion and abortion-related activities (such as biomedical research and sterilization) in foreign nations.  Contrary to what some may believe, the policy does not reduce family planning funding overseas nor does it cripple women in their fight for reproductive rights.  The Mexico City Policy merely ensures that federal funds are not used to promote a practice that many Americans find repugnant and that many foreign nations still oppose. . . ."

The fact is if the Mexico City Policy is repealed Americans can count on even more of their tax dollars being used to promote abortion.  And, that is a tragedy.
