This is the latest installment in a year-end series looking back at a few of the hundreds of victories by the ACLJ in 2011.

In 2009, one of the most pro-abortion Congresses we have ever seen repealed a little known, but incredibly important, budget amendment that had prevented taxpayer funding for abortions in Washington, DC. Since then $185,000 of our tax dollars were used to directly fund at least 300 elective abortions.

The ACLJ has been fighting to stop this unconscionable practice of forcing American taxpayers to fund the abhorrent practice of abortion, urging Congress to close this loophole in the nation’s capital. Federal law that affects the rest of the country already prevented federal dollars from being directly used to commit abortions, but DC’s budget is separate. Earlier this year, Congress voted to close this loophole and prevent any further tax dollars from being used to directly fund abortions in Washington, DC. This is a major victory, potentially saving lives of hundreds of unborn babies.

In the year ahead, we will continue to fight for the lives of the unborn and to defund Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry. The Obama Administration has fought to provide more and more funding for abortion providers – taxpayer funds that can be used to free up other resources to commit more abortions. Our tax dollars should not fund abortions – directly or indirectly.

To help the ACLJ continue to have the resources we need to make these victories possible and continue these fights, please consider making a donation to the ACLJ through our year-end Matching Challenge. Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar though the end of the year.
