Trump Update: New York Closing Arguments
Listen tothis article
Closing arguments are taking place today in President Donald Trump’s New York City trial. Will DA Alvin Bragg’s legal team convince the NYC jury to convict the former President?
Fox News reports on Trump’s big day in court:
Former President Trump arrived to the Manhattan courthouse for his New York criminal trial on Tuesday, speaking briefly to reporters outside the courtroom.
The trial resumes Tuesday with both the prosecution and defense offering their closing arguments, which judge Juan Merchan says will last the entire day. Trump argued that the verdict in the case could be a “dangerous day for America.”
Altogether, President Trump faces 34 counts in his New York City trial over whether he falsified business records during his 2016 presidential election campaign. Normally, such a violation, if proven, would be a misdemeanor and result in a fine, yet DA Bragg has elevated the charge to a felony by attempting to twist it into a campaign finance violation that could include prison time.
The last couple of weeks were not good for the prosecution. One of the primary witnesses admitted to stealing $30,000 from Trump while serving on Trump’s election team. How will such a shocking revelation impact the jury’s decision?
Judge Juan Merchan hopes to wrap up closing arguments by this evening, and then the jury will receive its instructions for rendering a verdict. Sometimes verdicts come rather quickly, or they can take some time – no timeline is provided. Ultimately, the jury must be unanimous in its decision to convict President Trump in this felony case.
A caller to Sekulow asked if President Trump could actually end up in jail if convicted. I have a hard time seeing him put behind bars based on his status as a former President. I could see the Secret Service getting involved to stop Trump from being put in prison or maybe even something limited like a house arrest. Regardless, the outcome would be appealed quickly.
We also had some breaking news regarding Trump’s classified documents case in Florida. As you remember, Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team admitted to tampering with the classified documents that he is accusing Trump of mishandling. Trump’s team also accused Smith’s team of witness tampering, which led to a big blow-up in court last week.
Smith had requested that Judge Aileen Cannon put a gag order on President Trump to prevent him from publicly discussing the case. The news broke that the judge denied Smith’s request for a gag order, stating that Smith’s request was “wholly lacking in substance and professional courtesy.” The judge is likely losing patience with how fast and loose Smith’s legal team has been in handling evidence and making outrageous requests throughout the entire trial.
Let’s shift gears to the latest revealed attacks on Israel from the Biden Administration. Senator Shelley Capito (WV), the Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, held a press conference regarding how a $50 million grant was given to a pro-Hamas “climate justice” group. The EPA awarded the grant under the guise of the Inflation Reduction Act – further showing how the Administration is utilizing your tax dollars.
ACLJ Senior Counsel for International and Government Affairs Jeff Ballabon reacted to this shocking $50 million grant:
The ACLJ obviously from the beginning [has] been doing FOIA requests – Freedom of Information Act requests – precisely to ferret out this. Because we’ve known, thanks to some information we’ve gotten in Israel but also information we see in America itself, that there’s U.S. federal dollars, meaning our tax money . . . is given over to these organizations with these benign-sounding names or irrelevant-sounding names and being funneled straight through to the terrorists who are committing these genocidal atrocities. In other words, it’s actually U.S. dollars that are funding to subvert the Israeli government, to bring down the coalition, and to try to stop Israel from defending itself.
Though the Biden Administration continues to flip-flop in supporting Israel, the ACLJ remains steadfast in defending our ally. We are demanding that other countries put sanctions on Iran after it sent 300 drones to attack Israel, and we are urging the U.S. to put sanctions on the ICC after it issued arrest warrants for Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders.
Today’s Sekulow broadcast included a full analysis of the forthcoming verdict in President Trump’s New York trial. Will the far Left’s lawfare against the former President result in a conviction? Also, ACLJ Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy Ric Grenell criticized the Biden Administration’s “floating pier” strategy in Gaza.
