How Biden and the Left Are Using Your Tax Dollars To Fund Far-Left, Open Borders NGOs To Create a Humanitarian Disaster at Our Southern Border

The Biden Administration claims it is against illegal immigration, but it is actively facilitating the mass movement of illegal immigrants across South and Central America.  This has resulted in an ongoing humanitarian disaster and a direct threat to America’s national security.

The thick, heavy jungle straddling Colombia and Panama constitutes a 66-mile gap in the Pan-American highway, known as the Darien Gap, that has long served as a natural obstacle for illegal immigration – until today.  Less than a decade ago, only a few thousand immigrants attempted to cross this treacherous terrain each year on their way towards our southern border, opting instead to either turn back or find other means to travel north.  Last year, though, incentivized by Biden’s weak border policies and helped along by insidious United Nations (U.N.) organizations, half a million immigrants crossed it.

According to a U.N. report, nearly a quarter of the immigrants who crossed the Darien Gap last year were children, and almost 100 are confirmed to have either died or gone missing while traversing it – a number that is highly likely to be under-counted given the difficulty of keeping exact, official records in such an environment.  Many of the children make it to the other side having lost their parents or worse.  Migrants, especially children, women, and the elderly, are at the mercy of the gangs and thugs who offer to help them pass through the jungle terrain, and many women reach the other side having been robbed, raped, or both.  Whatever these international organizations may tell themselves about the work they are doing, this situation is neither humane nor conscionable.  We should work with Panama and Colombia to shut it down, not encourage it.

Unfortunately, Biden, U.N. organizations, and NGOs are fueling these tragedies with bad policies and false promises, and they are supporting them with American tax dollars to boot.  The International Organization of Migration (IOM), a U.N. organization dedicated to “humane and orderly migration,” routinely provides travel assistance – including cash payments and interest-free loans – to help migrants on their journey through South and Central America all the way to the U.S. southern border.  Pre-paid credit cards provided by NGOs awash in U.S. grant money await migrants once they reach the border, and then cities like New York hand out even more cash once migrants arrive.

All this costs massive amounts of money, but where does it come from? You, the American taxpayer. In the last 12 months alone, the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), along with the U.S. Agency for International Development, have given IOM $1.4 billion.  PRM is also the biggest donor to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, which is among 15 different U.N. agencies that spread money and aid across migrant pathways in Latin America. And what do migrants do with this money and resources?  In most cases, the money and resources are used to pay off the cartels that guide migrants to the border.

In effect, the Biden Administration is facilitating massive illegal immigration by laundering American tax dollars through a plethora of U.N. organizations and NGOs right into the pockets of drug cartels.

Worse, this illegal immigration presents a serious risk to America’s national security.  If you were to visit the camps of immigrants preparing to make the treacherous journey across the Darien Gap, you would see something different than in years past: thousands of Chinese migrants.  Of the 500,000 migrants who crossed the Darien Gap last year, 25,000 were Chinese nationals – making them the largest nationality outside of the Americas to make the crossing.  Moreover, these Chinese “migrants” are often well-funded and well-connected: According to one report, they often take special “VIP” routes across the jungle that are led by guides working for the Gulf Clan, Colombia’s largest drug cartel.  This means the same cartels that are buying the components to manufacture fentanyl from Chinese producers and funneling the toxic drug into the United States are also helping facilitate the migration of Chinese nationals across America’s southern border.   All the while, it appears the Biden Administration has shockingly done nothing about this, except hand over more of your money.

It only took a handful of ISIS terrorists to kill over a hundred Russians in last week’s terrorist attack.  We’ve let millions of illegal immigrants cross our southern border.  Who knows how many of them are ISIS terrorists or other terrorists plotting to do harm to Americans.

The record numbers of illegal immigrants streaming across our southern border are not showing up by accident or coincidence, and the Biden Administration is not merely incompetent.  This is a crisis of the Administration’s own deliberate making.  Before serving as Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas served on the board of HIAS, one of the many NGOs aiding illegal immigration across South and Central America.  Amy Pope, now head of IOM after the Biden Administration’s contentious effort to place her there, previously served as U.S. Deputy Homeland Security Advisor to President Obama and Senior Advisor on Migration to President Biden.  These individuals know exactly what they are doing, which is why the immigration crisis is going to continue to get worse under their leadership, not better.

For the sake of America’s national security and to end a humanitarian disaster, we should demand America’s leaders work with Panama and Colombia to close the Darien Gap, end U.S. aid to organizations facilitating illegal immigration, and go after the cartels profiting off this misery.
