Radio Recap – BREAKING: ACLJ Files Suit Challenging California Church Singing Ban
The ACLJ files a major lawsuit in California, challenging Governor Gavin Newsom’s ban on singing and chanting in churches and other places of worship.
On today’s Jay Sekulow Live, we discussed the actions that we at the ACLJ are taking to fight California’s ban on singing in churches. We have filed a lawsuit challenging the ban.
This is a major lawsuit challenging the California ban on singing and chanting in churches that was issued on July 1st. We are representing three churches in California. By the way, they are in counties that are not under that new order that was announced late last week by Governor Newsom which shut down basically almost 80% of the state. These churches are in the counties that can still operate as churches but they have this mandate that says they must cease singing and chanting in churches. We at the ACLJ, representing these churches, have taken Governor Newsom, the California Health Director, and two county health officials to federal court.
As you know we always encourage our listeners to call into the show. Carolyn from Texas, a listener to the show, called in and told a great story. Here’s what she had to say:
I’ve been in the situation that these churches are in where if they like what you have to say, you get to say it and if they don’t, you’re muzzled. I came to Christ through a high school Bible study that was basically given an ultimatum of knock it off or be kicked out of high school. We got help from [the ACLJ]. That situation is the reason I’m a donor now. This group needed to be here to help other people. These churches could not fight this on their own. There’s no way, they wouldn’t be able to do it.
My dad, Jay Sekulow, responded to Carolyn when he said:
Well as you experienced firsthand that is why we have existed since the 1980’s and looks like we helped you in the 1990’s, and we continue to do that every single day. I mean, that’s the mission of the American Center for Law and Justice . . . .
We at the ACLJ could not help people like Carolyn or fight unconstitutional actions against churches without your help. We are in the middle of our Matching Challenge which means that a $5 donations becomes $10, and a $10 donation becomes $20. Please consider helping us continue to fight for the rights of churches by donating here.
