Chants of “Death to America” rang out recently at a pro-Palestine protest in Dearborn, Michigan. However, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) and Governor Gretchen Whitmer remained silent about the anti-America chants. Rep. Tlaib also had a meltdown caught on camera as she refused to talk to Fox News’ Hillary Vaughn about the controversy.

The Daily Caller reports on the anti-Israel, anti-America rally and Tlaib’s subsequent meltdown:

Participants at an Al-Quds Day rally in Dearborn, Michigan, chanted “death to America” as one speaker, Tarek Bazzi, called the U.S. one of the “rottenest countries” in the world in part for siding with Israel. Tlaib, an outspoken supporter of Palestine, has not released any statement regarding the chants.

“I don’t talk to Fox News!” Tlaib shouted as Vaughn addressed her in the halls of Congress.

“At a rally in your district, people were chanting ‘death to America,’ do you condemn —”

“I do not talk to Fox News,” Tlaib said.

Should denouncing shouts of “Death to America” on the streets of the U.S. be controversial? Even the White House put out a statement that condemned the chants. But Tlaib likely only cares about appealing to the radical anti-Israel voters in her district.

ACLJ Senior Counsel and Director of Policy Harry Hutchison is a native of Michigan and knows the Dearborn area well. He pointed out that Dearborn has a rocky history with racism, with its ties to Henry Ford, who was infamously an outspoken antisemite. Also, the protest took place in front of the Henry Ford Centennial Library, signifying the ongoing historical pattern of racism against Jews.

Professor Hutchison also explained why Tlaib refused to denounce the “Death to America” chants that took place:

She is playing brilliantly, if you will, the oppression card, and it will play well, unfortunately, in her district. And it will help ensure her reelection. So she’s not playing to the American people. She’s focused on her particular district. I think, in the scheme of things, this perhaps hurts the Democratic Party, but I’m not sure she’s particularly concerned about that. I think she is a particularly self-interested individual.

Michigan and Minnesota have especially seen a large influx of Islamic voters in recent years. And President Biden finds himself in a difficult position trying to placate American anti-Israel voters – who are calling him “Genocide Joe” – without alienating other factions of his base.

Professor Hutchison also asserted that Biden’s failures to adopt sound principles regarding Israel are backfiring against him. If the President had maintained staunch support for Israel’s right to defend itself after Hamas’ brutal October 7 attacks, he wouldn’t be stuck trying to promote opposing policy positions on Israel. His weak foreign policy on Israel is coming back to bite him.

ACLJ Senior Counsel CeCe Heil joined the show to give an update on an ACLJ victory regarding Jewish students at Georgia State University. Initially, the Jewish students had to decide between preparing for and taking final exams or observing Passover. We sent a letter to the university requesting religious accommodation for Jewish students.

The university responded by acknowledging the importance of “recognizing religious beliefs and providing accommodations to allow students, faculty and staff to practice their respective beliefs.” The university sent a campus-wide broadcast to remind students, faculty, and staff of their ability to seek religious accommodation.

It’s awesome to see the power of the ACLJ at work in helping others. The university specifically pointed out that the campus-wide email promoting religious accommodation was sent because we brought up the issue. This is a university with thousands of students – responding like this to directly inform its student body how individuals could recieve religious accommodation is a huge deal. And best of all, the Jewish students were properly afforded religious accommodation.

Today’s Sekulow broadcast included the shocking refusal of the far Left to denounce chants of “Death to America.” ACLJ Senior Counsel for Global Affairs Mike Pompeo joined to discuss President Biden’s failed policies. Read his latest ACLJ article about why the world is more dangerous under Biden’s leadership.
