When will Vice President Joe Biden pick a running mate?

On today’s Jay Sekulow Live, we discussed the speculation over who will be former Vice President Biden’s running mate and when he may make that announcement. We also discussed the wrangling currently going on in Washington over another COVID-19 stimulus package.

The official Democrat National Convention date was supposed to be July 13th-16th. Then it got moved to August 17th-20th, and now it will all be done virtually because of COVID-19. The same thing is happening for the Republican National Convention, which had originally planned to hold their event in Jacksonville, Florida. They didn’t have to move their dates because as the incumbent, the convention is generally held later.

Under normal circumstances, we would have known the VP choice in July, prior to the Democrat National Convention. But with the convention getting moved to August, we still don’t know Vice President Biden’s choice for a running mate. The former VP has promised that he would announce his choice for running mate this week.

During a press conference, the former Vice President had talked about where he was in the process of picking a running mate:

I’m not releasing the names of all the Vice Presidential potential nominees. There are a number of women of color, there are Latino women, there are Asian, there are across the board. And we’re just under way now in the hard vet, of going into the deep background checks that take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks to be done. The committees have been formed, and that’s underway.

Former Vice President Biden was then asked if August 1st was still the target announcement date and he replied:

Well, early August. I can’t guarantee you August 1, but it would be in early August. Several weeks before the convention, I believe.

This VP pick is probably one of the more important picks in recent memory, and we still don’t know who it is or when exactly the announcement is going to be made. I explained how, based on my political experience, I think his running mate probably needs to be someone perceived as being able to run the country from day one as well as being able to be someone who is able to campaign virtually, which is very new for a presidential election.

Our team will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, give you updates.

I also wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who donated during our July Matching Challenge. We exceeded our July goals thanks to your support. That is especially great news because as we announced on Friday, we took our first actions after being contacted by nearly 1,500 families across the country with children in public schools who are facing significant hardships and couldn’t afford attorneys.

We are only able to advocate for these families at no cost because of your support. I just want to give a huge thank you to those who support the work of the ACLJ.  Even in this time of uncertainty with this pandemic, your financial support last month as part of our July Matching Challenge, helped numerous families who would not otherwise have access to crucial legal help. Thank you and God bless you.
