As Americans all around the country celebrated Independence Day with friends and family this past weekend, the mainstream media used it as an opportunity to spread hate for America. Massive news outlets as well as sitting Members of Congress went public with their negative view of America, the flag, and the most important documents in history. This sets a dangerous precedent for the younger generations who are being taught to hate America.

The New York Times weighed in on Americans who put out flags on Independence Day to honor America and celebrate an important aspect of our history. The New York Times went as far as tweeting:

Today, flying the American flag from the back of a pickup truck or over a lawn is increasingly seen as a clue, albeit an imperfect one, to a person’s political affiliation in a deeply divided nation.

A worldwide news outlet openly spreading division in America by discouraging flying the American flag on Independence Day is about as bad as it gets. Unfortunately, it gets worse – National Public Radio described one of the most important documents in American history – the Declaration of Independence as:

The Declaration is a document with flaws and deeply ingrained hypocrisies.

It doesn’t even stop there. Members of Congress immediately followed the mainstream media’s lead. Representative Cori Bush also criticized Independence Day by tweeting:

When they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they’re referring to is for white people. This land is stolen land and Black people still aren’t free.

This encourages the generations to come to hate America. If Members of the United States Congress are willing to say these things about a country they supposedly serve, American citizens will follow. Representative Maxine Waters tweeted:

July 4th . . . & so, the Declaration of Independence says all men are created equal. Equal to what? What men? Only white men? Isn’t it something that they wrote this in 1776 when African Americans were enslaved? They weren’t thinking about us then, but we’re thinking about us now!

ACLJ Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy and former Acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell explained the danger of this movement:

Jeane Kirkpatrick called the “Blame America First” crowd and she was right back then and she would be right today. . . . We need to be very clear about what is happening here. We have people who do not understand the world and do not understand how lucky they are to be in America – literally bashing and attacking the greatest country in the world. I can tell you after traveling the world that we are the most generous Nation in the world when it comes to allowing people to become citizens. There’s a million people a year that get to be citizens. But there are 50 million more waiting. There are so many people waiting to come into this country because we are the greatest country in the world. And some of these people that are attacking us should travel more. The one thing I want to point out is – I don’t see attacks from first or second-generation Americans. You have to ask yourself why it is? Why are the people that have experienced fascism somewhere else that land in America so grateful to be here and know this is the greatest country? Why are they not the ones attacking the flag or attacking America? It’s because they know the truth and they know what it’s like in other places.

ACLJ Chief Counsel and my dad Jay Sekulow explained the irony of all this:

So, here’s the irony – the very liberties and freedoms that allow these individuals to post this and to pronounce this are the very liberties enshrined in the Constitution, in the Bill of Rights, that are recognized in the Declaration of Independence, that we get our liberties and freedoms from God. That’s where it comes from. Then the government's job is to protect those liberties. So, the irony to me of all of this, and I think the first-generation and the second-generation is correct and the millions of people trying to get into the U.S. now, is the fact that people lose sight of the greatness of this country. Problems? Sure. We are human beings, we are all fallen. Having said that, the fact is I can’t think of another country any of these critics would rather be living in.

Jay Sekulow summed it up best this way:

No one is saying that [the American constitutional system] is . . . perfect. But it's the best system to obtain equality that mankind has ever seen.
