We have quite a contrast going on here. As the Senate takes up impeachment, President Trump continues to govern and get victories for the American people.
On today’s Jay Sekulow Live we discussed the impeachment process moving over to the Senate for the trial, while President Trump continues to govern during this whole process, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s lack of decorum by smiling and giving out souvenir pens during a ceremony in which she signed the articles of impeachment.
From the Senate floor, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell commented on Speaker Pelosi’s actions:
Well nothing says seriousness and sobriety like handing out souvenirs, as though this was a happy bill signing, instead of the gravest process in our Constitution. This final display neatly distilled the House’s entire partisan process into one perfect visual.
Senator McConnell also characterized the impeachment process in the House:
It was transparently partisan performance from beginning to end. That’s why they sped through a slapdash inquiry in 12 weeks, when previous Presidential impeachments came after months, if not years, of investigations and hearings.
You remember all that talk about how solemn this occasion was supposed to be and how it was for the children? Yet Speaker Nancy Pelosi had special pens made. They didn’t say impeachment, but they did have her signature on them. They were black and gold pens that she gave to her House leadership and impeachment managers. We also saw Speaker Pelosi smiling. The pretend somberness was clearly all a game, because once they got their impeachment, they all wanted their special little pens.
While all this is going on, President Trump signed a historic Phase One trade agreement with China and today, the U.S. Senate passed the USMCA (United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement) trade deal today. They passed the USMCA before they received the House impeachment managers and formally read the articles of impeachment. These trade deals are major victories for the President and the American people.
ACLJ Director of Government Affairs Thann Bennett made the following point:
Any one of these would have been a landmark achievement on its own and breaking news across all of the networks. Of course, many people said that a China deal could never be accomplished and now Phase One is signed. The vote was not close on the USMCA [which wound up being 89-10]. There’s nothing like trying to impeach a President that you have just stood with on a major foreign policy win.
The bottom line is the President continues to do his job, governing while this impeachment process has dragged on. He’s making trade deals, appointing conservative judges, and working to keep America safe from terrorists. Speaker Pelosi is grinning and handing out souvenir pens.
