Political Nightmare for Mamdani
Listen tothis article
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces a massive political backlash during the blizzard that has overtaken his city. In an ironic twist the socialist mayor doesn’t believe in voter ID laws, but his citizens will need multiple forms of ID, including a Social Security number, to become an “emergency snow shoveler.”
According to the New York City Department of Sanitation’s website, to qualify to shovel snow, you need to be a U.S. citizen and have “Two small photos (1-1/2 inch square)”; “Two original forms of ID, plus copies”; and a Social Security card. So again, you don’t need an ID to vote in NYC, but you sure better have the plethora of forms of ID to be part of the relief team in a state of emergency.
Of course, much of the current political debate in the country is on the Trump Administration seeking to require a valid ID and proof of citizenship to participate in federal elections (SAVE America Act). And you can bet the far Left isn’t going to be on board with multiple forms of voter ID to vote during the midterms.
Concurrently, the ACLJ has long been at the forefront of preserving election integrity. In the 2020 presidential election, the nation saw how many states counted mailed-in ballots in the hours, days, and even weeks following Election Day – despite federal law establishing a single, uniform day for federal elections.
In battleground states and beyond, ballots postmarked by November 3 continued to be tallied well after polls closed, with some jurisdictions allowing receipt up to 10 days later, contributing to prolonged uncertainty and extended vote-counting periods that stretched far beyond the traditional Election Night resolution.
This practice effectively transformed a designated Election Day into a multi-week “election period,” raising serious concerns about uniformity, potential irregularities, and the dilution of the constitutional framework Congress established to ensure timely and secure federal elections.
For these reasons, the ACLJ has just filed an amicus brief at the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of 29 members of the United States Congress in a case where the stakes couldn’t be higher: the integrity and security of our federal elections. We will keep you updated on the outcome.
The ACLJ also has an update in our ongoing fight to defend Pregnancy Resource Centers against a vile smear campaign in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, a federal district court in Massachusetts dismissed our lawsuit challenging the Commonwealth’s coordinated campaign against pro-life centers.
ACLJ Senior Counsel CeCe Heil provided an update:
Our client is Your Options Medical, which is a licensed medical clinic in Massachusetts that has provided services like ultrasounds and everything to Massachusetts for more than two decades. So the state had filed a motion to dismiss [our case], and unfortunately, the federal district judge dismissed our case in Massachusetts against the government there. However, this is not the end of this case because we will be appealing immediately to the First Circuit.
And just pointing out that the judge was really wrong in his decision here because he basically said that Massachusetts was merely expressing views and promoting public health, and saying that’s definitely something that the government can do. But unfortunately, he viewed each comment or component of the state’s conduct individually, and there’s case law that requires a court to actually view government conduct in context and in totality. So we are obviously going to argue that he did not review this case correctly because when you look at what the government has done in totality, it’s absolutely a comprehensive campaign to silence and punish speech, which the First Amendment does not allow you to do.
As CeCe said, the ACLJ strongly disagrees with the federal court’s decision. It’s not all doom and gloom, and this is an outcome for which we already had a plan in place if needed.
We plan to appeal immediately to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Stay tuned for what comes next in this vital case to defend the lifesaving work of pro-life centers – in the meantime, sign our petition related to the case.
