As hundreds of thousands of Iranians took to the streets to peacefully protest the handling of the recent elections in their country, many expected President Obama to send them words of encouragement - to send the message that America stands with those who desire a free and fair election and who are being denied that right.

However, those presidential words never came.  Rather, the President chose to stay silent on even the fundamental matter of ensuring that elections are not rigged.  Congress is not standing by.  Led by Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN) and Congressman Howard Berman (D-CA), the House of Representatives today passed a resolution of solidarity with the Iranian people.  The resolution expresses support for all Iranians who embrace human rights, civil liberties and rule of law, condemns the ongoing violence being perpetrated by the Iranian government, and affirms the universality of individual rights and the importance of free and fair democratic elections.

With overwhelming and bipartisan support, the resolution passed by a vote of 405-1.  It is disappointing that the President has not made a stronger statement in defense of freedom and democracy, but it is heartening that the House of Representatives took the action it did today.  With countless Iranians putting their lives on the line in pursuit of freedom, it's important for America to stand up and provide strong moral support.

We'll bring you additional developments on this situation as they develop.
