Why Would Anyone NOT Want To Secure the Border?

With the ongoing crisis on the southern border, unfortunately made worse by the Biden Administration, millions of Americans are troubled and puzzled. It begs the questions, “Why?  Why not have a secure border? What is wrong with having an established border that is secure?”  Common sense says to be compassionate about those who wish to come to America—but at the same time, secure the border, making illegal crossing very difficult and expanding legal ports of entry.  The border as it is exacerbates the moral issue of human trafficking, the public safety issue of illegal drug flow that kills 100,000 Americans each year, and the national security issue of more and more individuals being apprehended who are on the terror watchlist.

In an insulting attempt to ask people to not believe their “lying eyes,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas continues to tell us the border is secure and is actually closed. Interestingly enough, the previous Administration admitted that the border was broken and did everything they could to fix it. It was not perfect—but they tried. The current Administration claims the border is fixed, at least closed and secure—and does virtually nothing to change it.  By the way, if a person gets their news from the mainstream media, they likely will hear little or nothing about the human tragedy and threats to the nation that occur daily at the southern border of the United States.

For example, immigrants seeking unauthorized entry die routinely.  They drown in the river; they die of thirst and exposure in the desert. They are frequently assaulted and killed by the drug cartels, and sometimes exposure to the fentanyl that some of them agree to smuggle in as payment to the cartels for facilitating their illegal entry is also deadly.  Fifty-three people died last month in the tractor-trailer vehicle in which they were hidden.

Human decency and kindness alone should motivate the Biden team to build a wall and do everything possible to discourage illegal crossing when one reads about the very young children who are found abandoned at the border and the thousands of young girls who are brought to the U.S. as sex slaves.  Yes, it is true:  America has become a center for young people who are brought to our country in the massive sexual trafficking business run by the Mexican cartels and other criminal organizations.  It is a moral blight on our nation that the present leadership is turning a blind eye to this.

Our adversary China has teamed up with the drug cartels to poison Americans.  This is not an exaggeration.  The fentanyl smuggled across the border is made in China and sent to the cartels in Mexico.  They take the bulk drugs and actually have small factories where they mix the fentanyl with pharmaceutical fillers and stamp out pills made to look like prescription drugs used in the United States.  Millions of these pills have been confiscated by U.S. authorities at the border.  In reality, some shipments of these deadly drugs get through.  People are dying daily in America from fentanyl poisoning. The cartels also smuggle in cocaine and methamphetamines.

The national security threat due to our porous border continues to grow.  This year, so far, 66 people have been apprehended at the border who are on the list of suspected terrorists.  That is more than all of the people with terror ties who were caught over the last five years—combined.  The people illegally crossing the border are not just from Central and South America—they are literally from all over the world, including the Middle East and Afghanistan.

What makes this even more alarming is that the people we know about with ties to terror are only the ones who were caught and apprehended trying to enter the U.S.  Of the 2 million-plus immigrants who have been apprehended this year trying to illegally cross (that is a historic record), there is an estimated half-a-million people who were not apprehended—the so-called Got-Aways.  Statistically, it is a given that in that estimated 500,000 Got-Aways, there are also an unknown number of terrorists.  They are in our country now—and we do not know who or where they are!  Others with terror connections are continuing to cross the border.  This threat should make the Administration take every possible action to stop illegal immigration.  But they are not doing this.

Any rational person realizes that many of the hundreds of thousands of immigrants claiming asylum are making false claims–their real motivation is not safety but rather starting a new life in America.  There is a legal process for that which they do not wish to follow. These false asylum applications are unfair to the people who truly are in danger and need to be granted asylum here.  But even though we know most of the claims are a farce, we play along.

The Biden Administration is stopping the Remain in Mexico policy, which required those seeking asylum in the U.S. to wait in Mexico while their cases were processed.  Contrary to what you hear, this was not an inhumane policy.  Those waiting in Mexico were fed and housed by the Mexican government, with financial assistance from the United States. This actually slowed down the number of people attempting to cross and the corresponding questionable asylum applications. In June 2022, 68% of those apprehended were single adults.  A total of 79,652 people were released into the U.S. while their asylum claims are adjudicated.  This can take years due to the backlog in immigration courts.  Meanwhile, they can legally live and work in the U.S.  These policies are a magnet for those wishing to enter our country illegally.

How long can our health and education systems around the nation tolerate over 2 million people a year entering the U.S.?  How much longer can communities, especially smaller towns and those along the border, adequately feed and house the sheer magnitude of people coming here?  Washington, D.C., and New York City are complaining about the mass of immigrants flooding into their cities.  Their resources are taxed by the influx. Border towns and cities with much smaller resources have been struggling with this issue for years—with little or no help from the federal government.

This must stop.  The Biden Administration must begin to take this issue seriously.

  • Border security and immigration reform should not be a partisan matter.  If the President wants to push legislation that would truly be a political victory, lead the way for comprehensive immigration reform.
  • President Biden must stop merely reacting to Donald Trump and allowing this to be the motivation that dictates his border policies.
  • The immigration laws on the books must be enforced.
  • Seriously—have a secure border that includes a wall. This is not a moral matter or an afront. Virtually every country in the world has a defined border that is secure.  The President is building a wall around his beach house right now.  What about the rest of Americans?
  • Expedite those with legitimate asylum claims and begin deporting everyone else who crosses illegally. That was the policy of the U.S. for generations.
  • Increase work visas so those legitimately seeking work in the United States can come here—legally.

The United States is the most hospitable nation on the planet.  Even before the border crisis, we welcomed more immigrants than any other country in the world.  We must not let the chaos at the southern border, and the lack of effective policies and procedures, cheapen and devalue the hospitality that has been a hallmark of America for well over 200 years. There must be order and procedures that welcome those in need—but shut down human trafficking and the drug cartels.  And we must take national security seriously and stop allowing terrorists to use our porous border as a port of entry in order to do harm to Americans.  There is literally no excuse and no commonsense reason for the U.S. to not have a secure border.  To our political leaders we cry, WAKE UP!!
