Under Oath: Hunter Biden Impeachment Testimony on Capitol Hill
Hunter Biden testified under oath before the House Oversight Committee today about his overseas business dealings (e.g., the Ukraine bribery scandal) and whether President Joe Biden was involved. In his opening statement, Hunter also slammed House Republicans for the probe into his family and the impeachment hearings for his father.
The Hill reports on Hunter’s opening statement:
“I am here today to provide the committees with the one uncontestable fact that should end the false premise of this inquiry: I did not involve my father in my business. Not while I was a practicing lawyer, not in my investments or transactions domestic or international, not as a board member, and not as an artist. Never,” Biden said during his opening statement. . . .
“For more than a year, your committees have hunted me in your partisan political pursuit of my dad. You have trafficked in innuendo, distortion, and sensationalism — all the while ignoring the clear and convincing evidence staring you in the face,” he said. “You do not have evidence to support the baseless and MAGA-motivated conspiracies about my father, because there isn’t any.”
Hunter’s deposition came on the heels of the key witness in the Hunter Biden probe being arrested for allegedly lying under oath. The truth came out that this individual had zero history with Burisma.
The testimony took place behind closed doors. We won’t receive any video of Hunter’s deposition, but we should receive a transcript within 24 hours. After we see what transpired, we’ll have a better idea if the impeachment inquiry into President Biden will move forward.
Hunter’s lawyer is Abbe Lowell, a friend of my dad (ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow). My dad asserted that most lawyers would list Lowell as one of the top three defense lawyers in America. But he would rank Lowell as number one because he’s brilliant and aggressive. Lowell is the reason no video of the deposition will exist.
If any of the deposition questions touch on Hunter’s charges, Lowell will likely counsel Hunter to assert the 5th Amendment and keep his mouth shut. Keep in mind that just because someone invokes the 5th Amendment, it’s not a sign that they are guilty. Innocent people invoke the 5th all the time, especially if they believe the prosecutor is being overzealous. We saw this repeatedly during the Russian investigation.
Usually, in a closed-door deposition with Congress, maybe a couple of Members of Congress participate. But we are hearing that almost all the committee Members are prepared to participate in Hunter’s deposition.
In the transcript, we’ll likely see names like Rep. Jim Jordan (OH-4) and Rep. James Comer (KY-1) asking questions. Normally, such questioning by many Congress Members would occur in a public hearing. So this is an interesting development.
On the show, I played the soundbite of President Biden bragging about using his power as Vice President to have the Ukrainian prosecutor removed in the investigation into Burisma.
The impeachment hearing will have to decide if such leverage reaches the level of high crimes and misdemeanors to warrant impeachment. The problem is that the bar for impeachment has been significantly lowered in recent years.
The ACLJ has a victory to report. If you remember, a student in a Las Vegas area school district was forced to perform a profanity-laced, sexually explicit, and obscene monologue before the entire class as a graded assignment. We took action to defend this student’s First Amendment rights.
The defense filed a motion to dismiss, and we were able to keep the case from being thrown out. So we will be moving forward in our lawsuit on behalf of the student. The war, in this case, now really begins. We will have more information for you next week.
Today’s Sekulow broadcast included a full analysis of Hunter Biden’s deposition and a potential impeachment of his father. ACLJ Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy Ric Grenell also joined the broadcast to react to Hunter’s testimony and the polls showing that immigration will be the number one issue for voters in 2024.
