Vladimir Putin's Nuclear Threat

This is not a laughing matter. Russia is recklessly threatening the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, which poses a very serious, very scary threat.

And it’s not just tactical nuclear weapons, which are already a line that should never be crossed, but weapons such as the 600 foot long nuclear weapon that has been referred to as a “radioactive tsunami.” We’ve all seen what a real tsunami does – mass death and destruction almost instantaneously and without much warning. Now imagine that in terms of a weapon launched against innocent people defending their country.

And like the deadly natural phenomenon, this weapon will strike from the sea, as it has been deployed on a Russian nuclear submarine. And the trains that carry Russia’s other nuclear weapons have already traveled to the front lines, right in plain view of the world. Russia is no longer hiding what it’s doing.

Putin’s nuclear threat is a threat not only to Ukraine, but to the entire world. Remember earlier this month the Russian President issued a blatant nuclear threat to the world:

To those who allow themselves such statements regarding Russia, I want to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction, and for separate components and more modern than those of NATO countries, and when the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, to protect Russia and our people, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal.

President Putin continued: “This is not a bluff.”

I asked ACLJ Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy – and former U.S. Acting Director for National Intelligence – Ric Grenell if based on his unique perspective, does he believe we are close to a moment in time where we will see nuclear weapons being used on the battlefield again? As Ric pointed out, the Biden Administration certainly isn’t making anyone feel any safer:

Look we really don’t know. I think we should take all of these threats from President Putin very seriously. But there is a huge strategic mistake going on in Washington D.C. and that is every time Putin talks about nuclear weapons or increasing the war, Washington’s only response is increasing the war on our end and doing more military options. Where is the State Department? Where is diplomacy. When a mad man and a leader is talking about using nuclear weapons, where is the U.N.? Where is Tony Blinken. Antony Blinken has a plane at his disposal. He can get on the plane immediately and go and speak to Putin. Joe Biden can do the same thing. I don’t understand what is happening in Washington. Nobody wants to talk. They just want to beat their chest and race to war. Haven’t we had enough of this?  This is crazy.

It’s easy to feel distant from the war in Ukraine, but now the talk of nuclear weapons has escalated the threat from Eastern Europe to the entire world. Putin cannot be allowed to use his nuclear arsenal. But so far we haven’t seen any effective diplomacy from the Biden Administration. I’m not sure which I find more unsettling: Putin’s threat, or Biden’s inaction.
