Yesterday President Biden stated the United States, and really the world, is closer to a nuclear "Armageddon" than we’ve been in 60 years. In fact, the President specifically pointed to the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 as the last time the world has faced such danger with regard to nuclear war.

While addressing a fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, President Biden told the crowd:

[Putin was] not joking when he talks about the use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons. We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Talk about an unnerving statement from a sitting President. Can you believe that in 2022, we’re still facing the prospect of a nuclear winter caused by two world leaders? And President Biden seems to have almost accepted this inevitability as a fait accompli.

With all due respect Mr. President, we the American people do not accept this fate as written in stone. It is your job sir to prevent that outcome with every possible option at your disposal. Not just throw up your arms and say, well it’s been fun folks, but this is the end as we know it.

And believe me, I do not throw words like that around. It’s okay to be irreverent sometimes,  but the clear and present danger of a nuclear attack is never one of those times. We are not alarmists, and we are not trying to scare you. But you should absolutely be concerned.

I asked ACLJ Senior Counsel for Global Affairs Mike Pompeo – former Secretary of State and Director of the CIA – for his reaction to President Biden’s seemingly irresponsible remarks and if a nuclear holocaust is really the only option on the table:

These remarks were both odd in terms of where they were made, how they were made, and exactly what he said. No, it’s certainly NOT the only option. And for a President of the United States to use that language – frankly, it’s seemingly kind of just wandering randomly in front of a group of donors – is deeply dangerous. That’s not been reported. Vladimir Putin’s certainly read that. Those around Vladimir Putin have read that. Leaders around that have read our President is talking about it in this way. The other thing that’s odd is he uses the passive voice as if he doesn’t have any role in this. He’s the President of the United States of America. To say that there is no other option as if he’s a passive victim of this is deeply dangerous, and frankly reflective of the weak Biden foreign policy for the first twenty months of their Administration. No, there are many other ways this can proceed, but most importantly, there’s a lot of work to do today to make sure that Vladimir Putin doesn’t use that nuclear weapon.

As I said to Sec. Pompeo, if President Biden believes this threat is coming, shouldn’t he have immediately taken to the television and internet to address the American people, and the global community to communicate that, in the hopes together we can stave off mutual annihilation. Not just mention it off the cuff to his supporters. I hate to say it, but I find myself hoping Vladimir Putin isn’t so cavalier about the prospect of nuclear war as our own President seems to be.
