We are pleased to report significant progress in our ongoing efforts to defend a Jewish law student at New York Law School. We are also hopeful that this may provide a blueprint for action at other universities where antisemitism has threatened Jewish students.

Our client recently graduated, but she wants to ensure that the kind of blatant antisemitism she endured at New York Law School is addressed and that no other student ever has to face a similarly unsafe educational environment.

Our legal team recently participated in a substantive meeting with the school’s attorneys – a development that demonstrates the seriousness with which New York Law School is treating this matter. The meeting provided an essential opportunity for direct dialogue with the school’s counsel, ensuring that our client’s case receives the focused attention and thorough examination it demands. We approached this meeting with cautious optimism, prepared to hold the school accountable while remaining open to good-faith efforts at resolution.

Most importantly, our client was interviewed as part of this process – giving her the opportunity to share her experiences directly with those investigating the matter. This interview represents a crucial turning point. Our client was finally able to present her full account of the systematic discrimination and harassment she has endured. Her testimony detailed the calculated pattern of exclusion she faced, from being effectively barred from the Middle Eastern student organization to witnessing official student groups celebrate the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks.

The interview process was conducted professionally and respectfully, allowing our client to articulate not only the specific incidents of antisemitism she experienced but also the broader hostile environment that has made her educational journey unnecessarily difficult and traumatic.

Positive Momentum in the Investigation

We are encouraged to report that the overall tone and substance of these proceedings have been positive. The school’s attorneys demonstrated genuine engagement with the serious issues raised in our client’s case. The positive nature of these discussions gives us hope that New York Law School is prepared to confront antisemitism in its campus culture and take meaningful action to protect Jewish students’ rights to pursue their legal education without fear or intimidation.

Following our meeting and our client’s interview, the school’s legal team has committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine what additional steps the institution will take to address antisemitism on campus. This investigation represents exactly the kind of serious, sustained attention that this matter has demanded from the beginning.

While we are encouraged by this progress, the ACLJ remains vigilant and prepared to take whatever additional action may be necessary to ensure justice for our client and protection for all Jewish students at New York Law School. Our commitment to this case is unwavering, and we will continue to monitor the school’s investigation closely to ensure that the necessary next steps are taken.

We expect this investigation to result in concrete, meaningful changes that address antisemitism on campus. Jewish students deserve the same protection from harassment and discrimination that the school would provide to any other group facing systematic targeting based on their identity. It will be important to ensure that people are held accountable so something like this doesn’t happen again.

The Broader Fight Against Campus Antisemitism

This case continues to represent far more than one student’s individual experience – it remains emblematic of the nationwide crisis of antisemitism plaguing American higher education. The progress we have achieved at New York Law School demonstrates what is possible when institutions are held accountable and Jewish students receive proper legal representation.

The encouraging developments in this case should serve as a model for other institutions grappling with similar issues. When schools take antisemitism seriously, engage meaningfully with affected students, and commit to thorough investigations, positive change becomes possible.

The ACLJ’s commitment to defending Jewish students and combating antisemitism on college campuses remains absolute. This case demonstrates the power of determined legal advocacy combined with a client’s courage to speak truth to power.

We will continue to monitor the results of New York Law School’s investigation and ensure that our client receives the justice she deserves. Moreover, we remain prepared to take on similar cases nationwide, defending the constitutional rights of Jewish students to practice their faith and express their identity without fear.

The encouraging progress in this case represents a victory not just for our client but also the principle that American educational institutions must provide equal protection and dignity to students of all backgrounds. When Jewish students can pursue their education free from harassment and intimidation, our constitutional order is strengthened, and our national commitment to religious freedom is reaffirmed.
