The Only Thing “Phony” is the Investigation

The Obama Administration is hunkered down.  The spin machine is in full force.  The mantra is the same: the IRS targeting conservatives is a “phony” scandal, just like all the rest.

The only thing phony here is the investigation.

For example, the Secretary of the Treasury, Jack Lew, on Fox News this weekend refused to answer the simple question if he or anyone at Treasury, which supposedly oversees the IRS, has asked IRS Chief Counsel William Wilkins if he had any involvement in the targeting of the Tea Party.

Senior IRS attorneys have pointed the finger directly to the IRS Chief Counsel’s office as being intimately involved in the targeting scheme.  The question – did the head of that office, Wilkins, an Obama political appointee, have anything to do with the scandal – is apparently too much to ask.

If you think the Obama Administration is really investigating anything, watch this clip.

Secretary Lew is directly asked about Wilkins’ involvement and refuses to answer.  What’s more, he relies on the same tired, “there is no evidence of” refrain.  If you don’t ask the question, how would there be evidence?

The evidence, as anyone who has ever been involved with any kind of investigation at any level knows, is only as good as the investigation itself.  If you ask the wrong questions, you will get the wrong answers.

President Obama refused to directly answer the question of when he first learned of the targeting.  The FBI has yet to speak with any of the targeted groups.  The IRS is dragging its heels , delaying turning over critical documents to Congress.  The Obama Administration won’t ask the IRS Chief Counsel, whose office was directly involved in the targeting, about his involvement or lack thereof.

This Administration is still yet to take even the most basic steps to investigate the IRS’s unconscionable abuse of power over the American citizenry.

If you don’t believe this is a “phony” scandal and actually want to hold the Obama Administration accountable for its actions, sign our petition today.

7.31.2013 Update:  Need more proof?  The IRS thus far has turned over a laughable 0.019% of documents that the IRS admitted to Congress it has related to the targeting scheme.  That’s 1% of 1% of the documents.  That’s a phony investigation.
