I want to report that our Slavic Center for Law and Justice (SCLJ) - based in Moscow - is representing one of the top human rights advocates in the former Soviet Union.

In the midst of the tragic terrorist bombings that have occurred in Russia over the past week, the prominent Russian human right advocate Lyudmila Alekseyeva was attacked in the street - while actually paying her respects to the victims of the first of several deadly terrorist attacks.

She was struck in the head and fortunately did not suffer serious injuries.  The assailant was taken into custody by police.  She's contacted our attorneys at the SCLJ for representation and to ensure that the assailant is held accountable in the legal system.

What's troubling is the fact that the judicial system in Russia does not offer the kind of protections to human rights advocates like Lyudmila Alexseyeva that are afforded to government officials, police, and even journalists.

You can learn more about this case here.

Lyudmila Alekseyeva has a long and distinguished record of fighting for the rights of the individual.  Among her many accolades, she was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom by the European Parliament - an award named in honor of the famous Soviet human rights activist Andrei Sakharov.

Our attorneys at the SCLJ will do everything possible to ensure that her rights are protected.
