ACLJ Calls on Pres. Obama and Sec. Kerry to Secure Release of Christian Mom and U.S. Citizens Held in Sudan

(Washington, DC) - The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) today called on President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry to take whatever action necessary to secure safe passage to the United States for Meriam Ibrahim and her American family.

There are still conflicting reports concerning the whereabouts of Meriam, her husband and two young children – the three of them are U.S. citizens. Sudanese officials took the family into custody yesterday at the airport – one day after releasing Meriam and her two children from prison.

“The actions of the Sudanese government are reprehensible,” said Jordan Sekulow, Executive Director of the ACLJ. “Whether they have technically been arrested or detained, they are being held against their will by Sudanese officials. While the State Department says it is engaged in efforts to free Meriam and her family, it is clear that this international incident requires the attention of both President Obama and Secretary Kerry. They must take whatever action is necessary to ensure that Meriam and her American family are released without delay and receive safe passage to the United States. Detaining Meriam and her American husband and American kids is intolerable.”

The ACLJ has launched a petition to pressure Sudan to release Meriam and her family and permit them to return to the United States. In one day, more than 100,000 people have signed on demanding their release.
