2012 Victories: State Hospitals Can’t Force Nurses to Abort Children

This is the latest installment in a year-end series looking back at a few of the hundreds of victories by the ACLJ in 2012.

Nurses who had a passion for working in Labor & Delivery, helping women and newborn babies receive lifesaving care, at one West Coast hospital were told by their newly appointed pro-abortion lead doctor that they would have to be willing to commit abortions in order to continue helping deliver and care for babies. Imagine your calling is to help babies be born and you are told that you must assist in killing them, regardless of your faith.

Not only was this illogical and morally repugnant, it violated the conscience rights of these nurses. The ACLJ took action informing the hospital that its new policy violated state and federal law that protects medical professionals from being forced to violate their faith. The hospital even went so far as to try to remove the objecting nurses from Labor & Delivery altogether for refusing to commit abortions.

In the end, the hospital relented and allowed these nurses to return to their lifesaving work. No one, especially a medical professional, should be forced to violate his or her faith. This was a significant victory not only for these nurses who held true to their faith, but for the lives of countless unborn babies to whom they are now able to minister and serve.
