As most of you know, over the last year I have made five trips to Israel working on a variety of projects to ensure stability in the region and religious freedom throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip.  We have also had our European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ), which is an NGO of the United Nations, work tirelessly to ensure that religious freedom can exist in this region of the world.  We also had the opportunity to take over 300 of our members and friends from around the country to Israel in June 2007.  This was an incredible trip where our members met with government leaders, leading academics, and even had lunch with soldiers from the Israeli Defense Forces on the border of Lebanon.  It is critical that we maintain our diligence in protecting Israels right to exist and religious freedom in that part of the world.

As Israel is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, there is a troubling sign on the horizon.  Starting this evening, President Bush is hosting the Annapolis Summit of Middle East leaders, which includes representatives from Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority, to meet and discuss the future of an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.  As the celebration for the reunification of Israel is taking place right now, there is currently a moveeven at the Summitto partition Jerusalem.  The position of the American Center for Law and Justice is that this would be a mistake.  The unification of Jerusalem is right biblically and politically, and is best for issues of national security.

I have instructed our lawyers at the ACLJ, in conjunction with our ECLJ lawyers, to prepare legal positions, strengthening the legal justification for a unified Jerusalem.  That information will be going up on our website shortly.   In the interim, we are calling upon thousands of Americans from around the country to have your voices heard so that Jerusalem being divided is not a bargaining chip on the table in Annapolis.  We will be sending this information to President Bush, the State Department, as well as to Israeli officials.  We are also going to have some leading experts on our radio program, Jay Sekulow Live!, this week to discuss these critically important issues.

Make no mistakeall of us would like to see peace in this region; but the way in which that peace is obtained will be critical if, in fact, it is to be a long-lasting resolution to a conflict that literally dates back to the time of the Bible.  If you would like to sign our Petition for a United Jersusalem, click here.
