2012 Victories: Stopping Malicious Prosecutions of Israel at ICC

This is the latest installment in a year-end series looking back at a few of the hundreds of victories by the ACLJ in 2012.

What Palestinian terrorists could not achieve through actual violence, rocket attacks, bombings, etc., they attempted to achieve through lawfare (warfare through the misuse of law). After Israel defended itself from terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians in 2009, the Palestinian Authority attempted to bring false war crimes charges against Israel at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Jay Sekulow, ACLJ Chief Counsel, led a team from our international affiliate at the United Nations (U.N.), the European Centre for Law and Justice, in presenting arguments in defense of Israel before the ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor. The ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor agreed with our arguments that “Palestine” was not a state and could not bring these false charges against Israel. The ICC dismissed the false charges earlier this year.

Now that the U.N. has voted to upgrade the terrorist-led Palestinian Authority’s status to “non-member observer state,” it may once again seek to bring these unfounded charges at the ICC. The ACLJ will be sure to stand with Israel in defense of the Israeli people against any future attempts to use this form of lawfare.
