Protecting Human Life & American Sovereignty

Much of the activity is Congress is already focused on the upcoming mid-term elections.  But there are still several key legislative issues under consideration that are important to Americans.

As Congress prepares to adjourn to return to home districts for the mid-term elections, we're engaged in vital legislative efforts underway that focus on the protection of human life.  At the same time, we're on the front lines defending an AZ law that's under attack.

First, as you know, weve been working in federal court to defend the State of Arizonas right to protect its own borders.  Now, the President in an act that undermines our national sovereignty has filed a report with the international U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, detailing the United States record on human rights.  Unfortunately, the report read more like a political document than anything, and worst of all, it includes Arizona law SB 1070 - the state's immigration law - in its list of possible human rights problems.

This is both factually incorrect and constitutionally inappropriate.  The United States has long led the way in advancing human rights, not only within our own borders, but also for people around the world.  Further, allowing an international body especially one that includes numerous notorious human rights abusers to investigate Americas record compromises the sovereignty so carefully secured by our Founders.

We are taking this fight overseas through our European affiliate, the European Centre for Law and Justice.  Well be filing a formal report with the Human Rights Council and delivering an oral intervention during debate on the report.  This is a critical fight for both Arizona and our own right to self-governance.   And, thousands of you already have taken a stand on this issue by adding your name to our petition urging President Obama to Stop the Assault on America.  Add your name here.

At the same time, we are monitoring several issues involving the sanctity of life that are being considered during the waning days of this Congressional session.

The first of these is an effort by Sen. Roland Burris (D-IL) to overturn the longstanding prohibition of abortions in our military facilities.  Should this succeed, our tax dollars would be used to turn military bases into abortion facilities and our military doctors into abortionists.  To make matters worse, the U.S. Senate is trying to make this change using the Department of Defense Authorization bill, which has resulted in this critical bill getting bogged down in unrelated items.

Next, we are continuing to support an effort by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA) to prevent the new healthcare law from funding abortions, as well as an effort by Rep. Chris Smith to institute a blanket prohibition on all government funding of abortion.

Finally, immediately following the elections, there will be a mad rush to finish the job of funding the government.  Should Congress choose to do this by passing an omnibus appropriations bill, we will be monitoring that process to ensure that any efforts to strip pro-life protections are vigorously opposed.

We will keep you posted on developments of these critical issues.  Stay tuned to Jay Sekulow Live! for updated information.
