An elementary school in Seekonk, Massachusetts refused a Christian student’s request to allow distribution of Easter event flyers, while allowing other students to distribute non-religious flyers. The student’s mother contacted the ACLJ informing us that the school’s Principal confiscated the flyers. When the mother contacted the Principal, she was told that “these kinds” of materials are not allowed to be distributed on campus. However, the Principal said that the student could hand out the flyers in sealed envelopes in the future in accordance with the school’s policy.

On Wednesday, March 27, when the student brought the flyers to the school in sealed envelopes, as per the Principal’s instructions, they were again confiscated. The ACLJ provided information about the law on student’s rights to the student’s mother. She presented that information to the superintendent and the superintendent discussed it with the school district’s attorney. The district’s attorney agreed with the ACLJ and the school allowed the student to distribute the Easter event flyers. We are thrilled with this outcome and are committed to protecting the religious freedoms of students when they are violated.
