A Wave Election: What Does it Mean?

Last night conservatives stunned the political world.

Republicans picked up 7 (and possibly 9) seats in the Senate, they picked up at least 12 seats in the House, and won a number of Gubernatorial races that shocked the pundits.

But what does it all mean?

First the basics.  Republicans will continue to control the House of Representatives.  Republicans will now also have a majority of the Senate, 52 of the 100 seats, with two more seats possible.  Republicans hold a slim but significant lead in Alaska (8,000 out of only 200,000 votes cast, over 3%), and there will be a December runoff where the incumbent Democrat barely won a plurality but not a majority where there were several Republican candidates in Louisiana.

With control of both houses of Congress conservative legislation will make its way to President Obama’s desk for the first time in his Administration.  He claimed the power of the pen, and now he will have it.  The Veto is his only constitutional way to block such reforms moving forward.

He’s previously threatened to circumvent the Constitution with “a pen and … a phone.”  We’ll certainly be keeping an eye on any such further attempts by this imperial Presidency.

But what last night really showed is that the American people have rejected the policies of President Obama.  In the days leading up to the election, President Obama said, “I am not on the ballot this fall. . . . But make no mistake: These policies are on the ballot. Every single one of them.”

He was exactly right.  And America soundly rejected his policies.  They elected pro-life, fiscally conservative, economy focused representatives to head to Washington.

President Obama has an opportunity to lead through compromise, but if past is prologue, it is unlikely.  We’ll continue to monitor developments to ensure that liberty is protected.  We’ll work closely with the House and Senate on the legislation we’ve been fighting for: to protect life, to stop persecution, to defeat ISIS, to stop uncontrollable debt, and more.

Stay tuned as Jay Sekulow, Jordan Sekulow, and our team break down more of the election results and what in means on our daily radio show, Jay Sekulow Live!, today.
