Flag Day (and Happy Birthday Army)
Today, June 14th, is Flag Day, a day set aside for Americans to commemorate the adoption of the “Stars and Stripes” by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. (Today also happens to be the 238th birthday of the United States Army.)
Flag Day began to be celebrated in the late 1800s, and the day was officially proclaimed as such by an Act of Congress in 1949.
As President Reagan once noted, “When we honor our flag we honor what we stand for as a Nation—freedom, equality, justice, and hope.”
If you have been meaning to fly the American flag outside your house or business on a regular basis, today would be a good day to start. For those unfamiliar with flag etiquette, the various rules are located here.
Enjoy the day.
