This morning, Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers filed a 58-page document with the Senate Judiciary Committee, answering a series of questions as part of a questionnaire.  The Associated Press is reporting that in 1989 when Harriet Miers was running for the Dallas City Council, she supported the Human Life Amendment to the Constitution that would prohibit abortion except when it was necessary to prevent the death of the mother.   Harriet Miers stated that she would actively support its ratification by the Texas legislature.  The questionnaire also asked whether as a city council member, Harriet Miers would oppose the use of public monies for abortion.  She indicated that she would oppose the utilization of public monies for the funding of abortions.

In her Senate questionnaire, Harriet Miers correctly noted the limited role of the judiciary and expressed her continued opposition to judicial activism.  What becomes quite clear upon review of her 58 pages of answers is that Miers is a lawyer with tremendous experience at both the trial and appellate levels.  In fact, she had three cases that wound up at the Supreme Court of the United States.  The fact of ones pro-life convictions should never be a disqualifier from serving on the Supreme Court of the United States.  It is also important to see a lawyer with both real trial and appellate experience serve on our nations highest court.  We will keep you posted as this story develops today.

I also wanted to let you know that we are finishing up our brief in the partial-birth abortion case.  We are filing an amicus brief in support of the United States Department of Justice, which has asked the Supreme Court to hear the case.  We are filing our brief on behalf of the American Center for Law and Justice and our members, as well as members of the House and Senate who actually drafted the law.  We will file this brief with the Supreme Court on Friday.  Check out our website for updated information during the course of the day.
