(Washington, DC) The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), focusing on constitutional law, said today it is calling on the Senate Judiciary Committee to provide a fair hearing for Supreme Court nominee John Roberts.

The American people deserve a confirmation hearing that reflects a fair and measured approach to learning more about John Roberts and his judicial philosophy, said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ, who is supporting the nomination.  I have known John Roberts for nearly 20 years and have worked with him on several cases at the Supreme Court.  I believe the hearings will provide the American people with a critical opportunity to find out what many of us already know that John Roberts is an extremely well qualified legal scholar who will serve with honor and distinction on the high court.  While there will be many questions about his views on a wide variety of issues, no one should expect John Roberts to state his views on issues that will certainly come before him on the high court.  No Supreme Court nominee should ever be forced to reveal their positions on specific cases that will come before them.  We call on the Senate Judiciary Committee to provide a fair forum for John Roberts next week hearings that will give the American people a true opportunity to discover that John Roberts will be a Justice who upholds the Constitution instead of legislating from the bench.

At the Supreme Court, Sekulow has worked with Roberts on several precedent setting cases involving abortion protests and prayer in public schools.  Sekulow says the ACLJ has heard from nearly 100,000 people who support the confirmation of Roberts.
