It was a critically important move to protect the sanctity of human life.  The U.S. House of Representatives voted 251-175 Wednesday night to approve H.R. 3, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.  H.R. 3 is sponsored by Congressman Chris Smith and represents the most comprehensive ban on taxpayer funding of abortion in history.

Current law restricts direct funding of elective abortions, but that restriction is accomplished through a patchwork of legislative language that must be renewed annually, and which suffers from significant loopholes.

H.R. 3 would solve both of these problems by making the prohibition permanent and statutory, as well as comprehensive enough to cover all taxpayer funding, not just certain portions of the federal budget as is currently the case.

H.R. 3 would also address many of the abortion related problem within Obamacare by prohibiting taxpayer dollars from subsidizing insurance plans that cover abortion.

We applaud Congressman Smith for this very thoughtful legislation and thank the House Leadership for scheduling the vote.

Now that the House has approved this common-sense measure, our attention shifts to the U.S. Senate, where it will face stiff opposition.

Still, given the fact that the vast majority of Americans do not want taxpayer funding of abortion, we call on the U.S. Senate to follow suit and approve the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.
