The use of federal dollars for abortion is once again at the center of important debate in Washington - this time the U.S. House of Representatives.

We told you last month that there was a move underway to use taxpayer dollars for abortions in Washington, D.C.  Unfortunately, the move is now gaining momentum as the House Financial Services Appropriations Subcommittee has approved language that would overturn the long-standing ban on public funds being used for abortions in D.C.

The ban, known as the Dornan Amendment, was first passed in 1988 and has been federal law ever since.  Because Congress acts as the legislative body for the District of Columbia, it holds the power to determine the appropriate use of taxpayer dollars.  For more than 20 years, both Republican and Democrat Congresses have recognized the problem with forcing Americans to fund a procedure that is so morally objectionable.  Unfortunately, the current Congress has so embraced the abortion agenda that it has initiated the process to remove this taxpayer protection.

The next step in this process will occur in the full Appropriations Committee, where pro-life members will attempt to reinstate the language.  If unsuccessful, the issue will move to the full House floor.  It is unclear whether or not Speaker Pelosi will even allow a vote on the matter.

Our Government Affairs department is engaged, and will continue to keep you updated on developments.
