Court Must Reject Atheist Suit Targeting Jesus Statue in Montana
It's a troubling pattern that we see often. An atheist group is "offended" by a statue or memorial that they consider to be offensive. They file a federal lawsuit to try to get it removed. This time, it's happened in Montana - a case we have been involved in for more than a year. As you'll recall, a statue of Jesus was put in place on Big Mountain at the Whitefish Mountain Resort in Montana in the 1950's by WW II veterans who were also members of the Knights of Columbus. The veterans were insp... Continue Reading

Atheist Group Launches Legal Attack Against Jesus Statue in Montana
We knew it would happen. The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an atheist group that continually challenges everything from the National Motto, the National Day of Prayer, and the Pledge of Allegiance, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Jesus statue - a Montana war memorial that's been displayed on a mountaintop since the 1950's. The FFRF lawsuit comes just days after the National Forest Service rejected arguments from the atheist group to remove the statue. The federal governmen... Continue Reading

UPDATE: ACLJ Support for MT Jesus Statue Dominates Comments to Feds
Your voice has been heard! Last week, we sent the National Forest Service our letter defending the Jesus war memorial statue on a Montana mountain - with more than 70,000 names - concerned individuals who stood with us in urging the Forest Service to renew a long-standing lease that would permit this historic memorial to stay atop Big Mountain, where it was placed nearly 60 years ago. The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an atheist, anti-Christian group, is opposing the lease renewal, c... Continue Reading

Protect Montana War Memorial Under Attack by Atheist Group
It is an organization that is dedicated to removing any vestige of our religious history and heritage in this country. I'm talking about the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) - an atheist, anti-Christian group - that we have battled over the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Day of Prayer, and even the National Motto. Now, the FFRF is targeting another historic display - this one in Montana - a statue of Jesus placed on Big Mountain at the Whitefish Mountain Resort nearly 60 years ago. Th... Continue Reading

Defending Your Rights and our Religious Heritage
Recently, a concerned citizen appeared on Fox News in defense of several cross memorials that have stood on public land in San Diego, California for over a century. She quoted Jay Sekulow, ACLJ Chief Counsel, in defense of another cross memorial in the Mojave Desert, that the public display of religious monuments is not a violation of the Constitution. We commend everyone who takes a stand to protect the symbols of our religious heritage in their communities. That is why we have provided Legal ... Continue Reading

UPDATE: Mt. Soledad Brief Filed
Thanks to the thousands of you who signed on to our Petition to Preserve the Mt. Soledad Cross Memorial in San Diego. We have just filed our amicus brief in support of the federal government's request that the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit rehear a case in which a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit declared that long-standing memorial unconstitutional. We believe strongly that this is an opportunity for the entire appeals court to correct a mistake made by a three-judge ... Continue Reading

Protect the Mt. Soledad Cross
We are not giving up. You may recall, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals declared the long-standing Cross Memorial at Mt. Soledad in San Diego in January unconstitutional. As you know, the ACLU is behind this litigation and spent years trying to get this memorial removed. Now, we're preparing for the next phase - urging the federal appeals court to reconsider the decision and permit a full panel of the appeals court to consider the case. We're preparing that critical amicus b... Continue Reading

A Faulty Ruling Targets San Diego Cross
It's disappointing, but comes as no real surprise. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has declared the long-standing war memorial cross on top of a San Diego mountain unconstitutional - a violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. As you may recall, we've been involved in this case for years - fighting to ensure that the cross survives legal challenges that now span decades. The decision represents a judicial slap in the face to the count... Continue Reading

Dept. of Justice: Put Up The Cross
There's a troubling new development in the Mojave Desert War Memorial Cross case. As you know, more than 70 years ago, the VFW put up a small cross in California's Mojave Desert - a World War I memorial. The cross has survived many challenges - most recently at the Supreme Court - with the high court just last month - ruling there is no constitutional crisis - saying the cross could stay in place. In an opinion written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court correctly concluded that "a Latin c... Continue Reading
