More Congressional Pressure Facing IRS over Tea Party Questions

    Washington, DC Tea Party rally

Congressional concern continues to grow over tactics used by the IRS to target Tea Party groups across the country - tactics that can only be described as an effort to intimidate and silence these organizations in this election year. We first reported on this last month, after it came to our attention that the IRS information and demands sent to local Tea Party groups around the country included probing questions that violate the free speech and freedom of association rights guaranteed by the F   Continue Reading...

Congress Investigates IRS Assault on Tea Party as “Beyond the Scope” and “Lacks Balance”

    Letter to IRS

Congress has begun an investigation into intrusive and unconstitutional letters sent by the Obama Administration’s IRS to Tea Party and other conservative groups. Representatives Darrell Issa, Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Jim Jordan, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs, Stimulus Oversight and Government Spending, have sent the IRS a letter demanding it account for its recent “overreach and selective enforcement” of rule   Continue Reading...

The Obama Assault on Our Values

Obama speaks about the economy during a visit to Troy, New York

President Obama is doing everything in his power to change America. He wants to re-shape this country. The fact is we have a president who is engaged in a radical assault on our values. We have a president forcing Americans to purchase pro-abortion health insurance under penalty of law. A president who ignores the Founder's framework and issues a stinging warning to an independent Supreme Court - a troubling threat as the case is still pending. The criticism continues to mount. The American Ba   Continue Reading...

U.S. Senate Demands Answers from the IRS

Demonstrators gather on the plaza near the U.S. Capitol to participate in a protest against Obama's fiscal and economic policies in Washington

There is good news to report from Capitol Hill that relates to our ongoing efforts to defend Tea Party groups from an intimidation effort by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The Senate has now engaged. First, by way background, we represent a number of Tea Party groups from across the nation that have received intrusive demands for information from the IRS. In addition to providing legal assistance with these demands, we’ve also publically called on Congress to provide appropriate over   Continue Reading...

Fighting Back Against Obama Administration’s Assaults

The Obama Administration, Justice Department, and Attorney General Holder are attacking life and liberty more and more each day, and we at the ACLJ are aggressively fighting back on all fronts. We are battling ObamaCare at the Supreme Court, preparing legal action against Obama’s abortion pill mandate, and representing Tea Party groups against IRS bully tactics, while still fighting to defend religious liberty around the globe. Last week, I was in Brazil meeting with government officials   Continue Reading...

Defending Tea Party from IRS Assault

Tea party rally in Washington DC

It is outrageous. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is demanding information from Tea Party groups nationwide - information that is clearly beyond the scope of legitimate inquiries - information that violates the First Amendment. As we have already told you this week, we've been contacted by dozens of Tea Party groups that are facing what can only be described as an intimidation campaign - an IRS demand that the groups provide information about the internal workings of their organizations - q   Continue Reading...

Breaking: A Broad-Based IRS Assault on the Tea Party?

Demonstrators gather on the plaza near the U.S. Capitol to participate in a protest against Obama's fiscal and economic policies in Washington

In the last 24 hours, my colleagues at the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) have been in contact with literally dozens of tea party organizations that have received intrusive information demands from the IRS, demands that seriously implicate their First Amendment rights. These information demands follow Tea Party requests for 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) status and include questions like the following: Do you directly or indirectly communicate with members of legislative bodies? If so, prov   Continue Reading...

    Evangelicals Still Driving Policy Priorities

Republican presidential candidates stand on stage before participating in a Republican presidential candidates debate in Charleston

In this turbulent 2012 GOP presidential primary, small government social conservatives - deemed Teavangelicals by David Brody - are still kingmakers in the Republican party. The only difference this year from years past is that we are three states into the Republican nomination contest and there is no consensus candidate among conservatives. Thus far we have had three votes (one caucus and two primaries) and three different winners. Social conservatives picked the winner in all three contests.   Continue Reading...

GOP Candidates to Make Social Issues Pitch at Values Voters

U.S. Rep. Paul, Texas Governor Perry, former Massachusetts Governor Romney, U.S. Rep. Bachmann and businessman Cain pose in Orlando

This year’s Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. this weekend could be a major turning point in the race for the GOP nomination for president. The summit couldn’t come at a more pivotal time, as the firstcaucus could be held as early as December – two and a half months from now. It will be the first time that ALL the major candidates will be speaking at the same event, and this audience, social conservatives, seems to be the one group that hasn’t settled on a candidate   Continue Reading...
