Religious Freedom Not Served by Bigot Consulting for the Pentagon
Should our military consult with white supremacist groups when revising policies against racial discrimination? Should it call the Westboro Baptist Church as it deals with the repercussions of repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell"? Or should it bring in Koran-burning pastor Terry Jones to consult as it continues its outreach to the Muslim world? Obviously not. And if generals of any branch of the military met with these groups, we’d question their good faith and their understand... Continue Reading

Who Would Describe Christians in the Military as “Monsters who Terrorize”?
Thousands of the brave men and women of our military who fight to defend the freedoms we hold dear find strength and renewal in their Christian faith. Yet, some would seek to remove their religious freedom, their freedom to freely practice their Christian faith from the military. Dangerously, one of the most ardent opponents of religious freedom – and in particular Christians – in the military is now apparently the Pentagon’s newest advisor on religious freedom and tolerance ... Are Military and Media Leaders Embracing an Anti-Christian Extremist?
Over at Breitbart.com, a post discussing potential Pentagon regulations prohibiting proselytization has gone viral, at last count with more than 1.2 million Facebook shares and 8,000 comments. While I’m not aware of any immediate or pending change in Pentagon policies regarding religious liberty, I am extremely troubled that it is apparently consulting with an anti-Christian extremist, Mikey Weinstein. Over at the Washington Post, Sally Quinn penned a rather remarkable piece — taki... Continue Reading

A Good Day for Academic Freedom
Within the past 24 hours, courts from both coasts handed down important rulings in two academic-freedom cases, both times rejecting university efforts to dismiss cases brought by conservative academic critics. The first decision denied the core of the defendants’ motion to dismiss a case brought by Professor James Enstrom, a case I’ve written about before. Enstrom not only blew the whistle on junk science behind recent proposed California diesel emissions restrictions, he discovered... Continue Reading

Constitutional Questions Plague HHS Secretary
It was an extraordinary exchange. Rep. Trey Gowdy, (R-SC) asking Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sebelius to explain the constitutional implications involved in the HHS mandate, which is under attack for violating the religious beliefs of millions of Americans. The mandate requires employers to purchase health insurance for their employees that includes coverage for contraceptives, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs. We filed a federal lawsuit challenging this mandate in March ... Continue Reading

A Catholic Call to Defend Religious Freedom
As you may recall, we're involved in a major federal lawsuit - defending a Catholic business owner in Missouri who is challenging the Obama Administration's HHS mandate, which requires employers to purchase health insurance for their employees that includes coverage for contraceptives, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs. We represent Frank R. O'Brien and O'Brien Industrial Holdings, LLC, based in St. Louis. Our lawsuit, which marks the first legal challenge to the HHS mandate from a pri... Continue Reading
