Protecting Warriors from ‘Uncomfortable’ Speech
Though it’s appalling that U.S. Army generals are meeting with an anti-Christian extemist while considering the issue of religious liberty in the military, I’ve been quite skeptical of the more alarmist reports about actual Pentagon policy. So far, reports of actual suppression of religious liberty have been isolated and infrequent, and the military’s existing protections are strong and commonsense. When I’m on active duty, I do not feel as if my religious liberty is supp... Continue Reading

ACLJ Affiliate Presents Pastor Saeed’s Case Before United Nations Human Rights Council
Earlier this week, a team from the European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ), the ACLJ’s international affiliate with Special Consultative Status as an NGO with the United Nations (U.N.), presented Pastor Saeed Abedini’s case before the U.N. Human Rights Council. This meeting presented a critical opportunity to elevate Pastor Saeed’s case in the international arena. This presentation at the U.N. represents one of the many ways we are engaging the international community in... Continue Reading

Protecting Third-Grader’s Right to Wear a Cross Necklace
We recently assisted a third-grade student at a public school in California, and his mother, who requested the ACLJ’s assistance to ensure that the student may continue to express his religious faith by openly wearing a cross necklace while he is on school grounds. The student often wears a cross necklace to school to symbolize his Christian faith, which has grown especially important to him after he and his siblings survived a dangerous car accident with virtually no physical injuries. O... Continue Reading

ACLJ Continues Work Supporting Challenges to the HHS Mandate
The HHS Mandate requires many employers, despite any religious objections they may have, to arrange and pay for employee health insurance coverage for contraceptives, abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization procedures, and related education and counseling. The American Center for Law & Justice ("ACLJ") represents the plaintiffs in five separate lawsuits challenging the application of the Mandate to businesses and business owners that object to the Mandate's requirements on religious grounds.... Interfaith Groups Urge Secretary of State Kerry to use “Every Diplomatic Avenue” to Save Saeed
27 groups and prominent religious individuals have signed an international interfaith letter to Secretary of State John Kerry on Pastor Saeed Abadini’s behalf. This diverse group of individuals and organizations, including everyone from Dr. Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention to the American Islamic Congress (AIC), urges Secretary Kerry to “use every diplomatic avenue possible to secure Mr. Abedini’s unconditional release.” The group writes in support of two... ACLJ Files Briefs Supporting Two HHS Mandate Appeals
The American Center for Law & Justice (“ACLJ”) has filed “friend-of-the-court” briefs in support of HHS Mandate challenges filed by the plaintiffs in the following two appeals: Autocam Corp. v. Sebelius (United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit) and Hobby Lobby Stores v. Sebelius (United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit). In both of those cases, the plaintiffs were denied injunctive relief to prevent them from having to comply with the Mandat... Continue Reading

The Obama Administration Just Doesn’t Get Religious Liberty
In the latest twist in the ongoing saga over the HHS Mandate -- the Obama Administration’s effort to force all employers to pay for their employees’ birth control and abortion-causing drugs regardless of the employer’s religious objections—the Department of Health and Human Services released today yet another variation on the regulations that ignited a firestorm of protest when first announced about a year ago. The previous version of the Mandate granted a “religio... Continue Reading

Appellate Court Understands HHS Mandate’s Burden on Religion
To date, the American Center for Law & Justice (“ACLJ”) has filed three federal lawsuits on behalf of for-profit businesses and their owners against the HHS Mandate and has filed friend-of-the-court briefs in thirteen other legal challenges to the Mandate. The Mandate requires most employers, especially those with fifty or more full-time employees, to pay for employee health insurance that covers contraceptives, abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and related education and c... Appellate Court Blocks HHS Mandate – ACLJ Clients’ Religious Liberty Protected
The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals has just issued a critical ruling temporarily blocking the abortion-pill mandate from forcing our clients, business owners in Illinois, to violate their faith. The injunction pending appeal blocks the HHS mandate just days before the mandate was set to go into effect for our clients. With this important ruling, all of the ACLJ’s clients with pending litigation over the HHS mandate have now been granted a temporary reprieve from the mandate’s vio... Continue Reading

Another Victory Against the Abortion Pill Mandate
Yesterday, the D.C. Court of Appeals issued a major victory in the ongoing litigation battle against the HHS Mandate, the government edict mandating that employers pay for abortion-inducing drugs in employee health plans. The case involved two religious institutions: Belmont Abbey College, a Catholic college in North Carolina, and Wheaton College, an Evangelical college in Illinois. The colleges independently sued the federal government earlier this year claiming that, among other things, the H... Continue Reading
