No, Vanderbilt, You Cannot Use State Power to Restrict Liberty
Our nation’s large private research universities have perfected a rather ingenious scam. They’ve lobbied state legislatures and Congress so effectively that they annually receive hundreds of millions of dollars in state and federal taxpayer dollars while at the same time escaping state oversight by pleading protection — as “private” organizations — from the prying eyes of the very taxpayers who keep them in business. In this manner they’re not that much ... Continue Reading

The Obama Administration Just Doesn’t Get Religious Liberty
In the latest twist in the ongoing saga over the HHS Mandate -- the Obama Administration’s effort to force all employers to pay for their employees’ birth control and abortion-causing drugs regardless of the employer’s religious objections—the Department of Health and Human Services released today yet another variation on the regulations that ignited a firestorm of protest when first announced about a year ago. The previous version of the Mandate granted a “religio... Continue Reading

Resolved: Our New Year’s Resolutions to Defend Your Liberty
A favorite family tradition takes place each New Year’s Eve. At dinner, our oldest daughter takes out a piece of paper that she’s been saving for a year – our list of last year’s resolutions. We read it, grade our performance over the past year, and then make new resolutions for the next year. So what are some ACLJ resolutions for next year? With liberty under attack at home and abroad, what will we do? RESOLVED: We shall continue to challenge the ObamaCare abortion pil... Continue Reading

2012 Victories and Facing the Challenges Ahead
Through the support of our members, we have had an incredible year of victories. In our 2012 Victories series, you have seen just a glimpse of the work of the ACLJ. Yet, despite these numerous victories, we still face many challenges in the year ahead. We are tirelessly fighting to defend the lives of unborn children. We are fighting to end taxpayer funding for the largest abortion provider in America, Planned Parenthood. We are fighting to stop Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion for... Continue Reading

Would Democracy Mean the End of Liberty in Egypt?
As Americans we’ve been raised on a simple moral formula: Democracy is good and dictatorships are bad. Historically, it’s tried and true – democracies rarely go to war with each other, democracies tend to protect individual liberty, and democracies are generally more prosperous than dictatorships. But our Founders recognized something that too many of us forget: A democracy is only as good as its citizens. A totalitarian, violent, racist electorate tends to elect totalitarian,... HHS Mandate Lawsuit Tidal Wave
Today, twelve lawsuits were filed in federal courts around the country challenging the HHS mandate requiring health insurance plans to include coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and contraception. Bringing the lawsuits are forty-three dioceses, hospitals, schools, and other Catholic charities. To describe this as a legal tidal wave would be an understatement. The extraordinary number of lawsuits and plaintiffs over one federal regulation, including a suit filed by the ACLJ in... Continue Reading

Military Chaplains’ Religious Liberty Again At Stake
It is an unfortunate scenario that has become all too common – our military chaplains receiving the brunt of a politically correct stifling of religious freedom. Over the past several years, most of the threat has come in the form of attempts to control how – and in Whose name – a military chaplain may pray. Now, in the wake of the President’s new position on same-sex marriage (and his proclivity for using the military as a trial balloon for his social policies), there i... Continue Reading

Governor Vetoes Religious Liberty at Vanderbilt
On Tuesday I reported that the Tennessee legislature had overwhelmingly voted to protect religious liberty at Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt, a non-religious private school and recipient of massive amounts of state and federal taxpayer dollars, had implemented a policy that required religious student groups to open themselves to non-religious leadership. In response, the legislature passed a bill that did two things: (1) protected religious liberty at all public universities in the state to p... Continue Reading
