Summum v. Pleasant Grove City: The Concluding Chapter Begins
Almost eight years ago, in July of 2005, a new age religious group called Summum filed a lawsuit against Pleasant Grove City, Utah. The group claimed that the city’s decision not to display a stone monument bearing Summum’s “Seven Aphorisms” in a city park violated the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment. Summum argued that because the city park contained a Ten Commandments monument donated by the Fraternal Order of Eagles the city had to display Summum’s Se... Continue Reading

Protecting Warriors from ‘Uncomfortable’ Speech
Though it’s appalling that U.S. Army generals are meeting with an anti-Christian extemist while considering the issue of religious liberty in the military, I’ve been quite skeptical of the more alarmist reports about actual Pentagon policy. So far, reports of actual suppression of religious liberty have been isolated and infrequent, and the military’s existing protections are strong and commonsense. Victory After Victory…and More Coming: Latest Update on the Tea Party Cases

In March of last year, ACLJ Senior Counsel David French told you that the ACLJ had been cont... Continue Reading

A Good Day for Academic Freedom
Within the past 24 hours, courts from both coasts handed down important rulings in two academic-freedom cases, both times rejecting university efforts to dismiss cases brought by conservative academic critics. The first decision denied the core of the defendants’ motion to dismiss a case brought by Professor James Enstrom, a case I’ve written about before. Enstrom not only blew the whistle on junk science behind recent proposed California diesel emissions restrictions, he discovered... Continue Reading

Protecting Third-Grader’s Right to Wear a Cross Necklace
We recently assisted a third-grade student at a public school in California, and his mother, who requested the ACLJ’s assistance to ensure that the student may continue to express his religious faith by openly wearing a cross necklace while he is on school grounds. The student often wears a cross necklace to school to symbolize his Christian faith, which has grown especially important to him after he and his siblings survived a dangerous car accident with virtually no physical injuries. O... Continue Reading
