A Lesson in the First Amendment for Schools
The debate over religion and free speech in the classroom is in the spotlight again. This time, a teacher is suing a school district in New York after she was forced to remove all religious content from her classroom - including an inspirational quote from former President Ronald Reagan. She was forced to remove sticky notes from her desk. And, she had to even take down a quote from President Reagan that included this message: "If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be... Continue Reading

Obama's Unprecedented Attacks on the Constitution Must Stop
There's a troubling pattern developing at the White House. President Obama is launching a direct attack on our fundamental freedoms - the U.S. Constitution. At the ACLJ, we remain committed to defending your constitutional freedoms. And, now, more than ever, they are at risk due to the policies and actions of the Obama Administration. You already know about the tremendous assault on the First Amendment - the Obama Administration putting in place HHS regulations that are simply unconstitutional... Continue Reading

IRS Harassing the Tea Party
The IRS has been caught in the act so to speak, harassing the Tea Party. The problem has been made even worse in the fact that the IRS has specifically singled out Tea Party groups across the country, demanding that they provide intrusive, personal information about their members. The information that the IRS is demanding goes far and beyond the scope of any information that the IRS needs in order to grant tax-exempt status and violates the First Amendment. The irony, and more likely the inten... Continue Reading

Constitutional Questions Plague HHS Secretary
It was an extraordinary exchange. Rep. Trey Gowdy, (R-SC) asking Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sebelius to explain the constitutional implications involved in the HHS mandate, which is under attack for violating the religious beliefs of millions of Americans. The mandate requires employers to purchase health insurance for their employees that includes coverage for contraceptives, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs. We filed a federal lawsuit challenging this mandate in March ... Continue Reading

Defending Tea Party from IRS Assault
It is outrageous. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is demanding information from Tea Party groups nationwide - information that is clearly beyond the scope of legitimate inquiries - information that violates the First Amendment. As we have already told you this week, we've been contacted by dozens of Tea Party groups that are facing what can only be described as an intimidation campaign - an IRS demand that the groups provide information about the internal workings of their organizations - q... Breaking: A Broad-Based IRS Assault on the Tea Party?
In the last 24 hours, my colleagues at the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) have been in contact with literally dozens of tea party organizations that have received intrusive information demands from the IRS, demands that seriously implicate their First Amendment rights. These information demands follow Tea Party requests for 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) status and include questions like the following: Do you directly or indirectly communicate with members of legislative bodies? If so, prov... Continue Reading
