The Fight Against the HHS Mandate Moves Forward

    aclj

As reported and described here and here, the Supreme Court today upheld the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act and the Individual Mandate, the provision under Obamacare requiring millions of Americans to purchase and indefinitely maintain health insurance or face annual penalties. Much commentary is sure to follow regarding the many consequences and implications of today’s decision, but one thing needs to be made abundantly clear: though the challenges to the Individual Mandate ... Continue Reading

Challenging the Mandate: Not Just for Catholics

Protestors hold a candlelight vigil as a part of a 'Kill the Bill' rally against Obama's health care legislation, near the US Capitol in Washington

Last week, twelve lawsuits involving forty-three Catholic schools, dioceses, and charities were filed in federal courts across the country. These suits challenge the HHS abortifacient-sterilization-contraception mandate and its unconstitutional coercion of conscience. One might be tempted to think the pending challenges to the HHS mandate, including those filed last week and the ACLJ case on behalf of a Catholic business owner, constitute a Catholic issue only. Not true. Soon after HHS Secret... Continue Reading

    Nancy Pelosi Does It Again

U.S. Speaker of the House elect Pelosi and her husband walk past abortion protesters as they arrive for an interfaith prayer service for House leadership in Washington

The House Minority Leader has done it again. A few weeks back, Nancy Pelosi was asked about the Protect Life Act and Catholic Bishops supporting the bill. (Among other things, the Protect Life Act prohibits discrimination against health care professionals and entities from participating in abortion procedures.) Ms. Pelosi expressed her opposition to the bill and the bishops with the snide remark, “I’m a devout Catholic and I honor my faith and love it … but they have this cons... Continue Reading

Rep. Pelosi, Conscience is More Than a ‘Thing’

House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) speaks to the media on Capitol Hill in Washington

In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Nancy Pelosi voiced her opposition to allow health care providers and entities to refuse to perform abortions for reasons of conscience. Knowing full well the efforts by the Catholic Church to encourage support for such conscience exemptions, Ms. Pelosi said, “I’m a devout Catholic and I honor my faith and love it … but they have this conscience thing.” With respect to the House Minority Leader, Ms. Pelosi not only needs a... Continue Reading
