ACLJ Victory Report: Churches Have Equal Right to Police Protection

The steeple of The First Congregational Church is juxtaposed with fall colors in Sharon, Connecticut.

Vandals, thieves, and arsonists have targeted Bible Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, North Carolina, for over two years, destroying thousands of dollars worth of equipment and burning down one of the church's buildings. Unable to prevent these senseless criminal acts on its own, the church reached out to local law enforcement. Officers of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were more than willing to help, but their superiors would not allow them to assist the church. Why? Simply becaus   Continue Reading...

Is the Court Changing Its Stand on Religious Freedom?

    aclj

On June 28, 2010, the Supreme Court of the United States narrowly ruled in Christian Legal Society v. Martinez that a university's "all-comers" nondiscrimination policy trumped the right of a Christian student organization to select its leaders according to the group's religious beliefs. Nigerian Christians Under Attack

    aclj

Recently, the American Center for Law & Justice engaged in a fact-finding mission across the northern states of Nigeria in an attempt to expose violent attacks against Christians. The findings from our mission are heart breaking: over 500 Christian churches have been attacked, almost 200 Christians have lost their lives, and thousands more have been displaced in the last year alone. Northern Nigeria is predominately Muslim by faith, but a small minority of indigenous Christians struggle to   Continue Reading...

Protecting the Autonomy of Churches at Supreme Court

A group of teen girls gathered for prayer.

There's a case now before the U.S. Supreme Court that goes to the heart of the constitutional protections afforded to churches and ministries. The case is called Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) (No. 10-553). At issue: the freedom of churches to select religiously commissioned teachers for their religious grade schools. Today, we filed a friend-of-the-court brief at the Supreme Court on behalf of our organization and the In   Continue Reading...
