Bible Club Allowed in New York Public High School
Recently the ACLJ assisted a high school student in starting a bible club at his public school in New York. The student had been told by the principal that he could not start a religious club because it was against New York law. The principal held this position although he did not provide the law or the school policy on the issue. The school freely allowed other clubs such as Chess Club, Jazz Band, and Gay Straight Alliance. After about three months of being repeatedly denied the ability to for... Continue Reading

Another ACLJ Victory for Equal Access
Recently, the ACLJ received a request for legal help regarding a high school’s refusal to recognize a Christian club as an official student organization. Our client, a student in the 11th grade at Monticello High School in Monticello, New York, was interested in starting a Christian club for students who would like to meet on campus during non-instructional time to pray and discuss Christian teachings. To date, the school had recognized a variety of student clubs that were permitted to m... Continue Reading

Protecting Third-Grader’s Right to Wear a Cross Necklace
We recently assisted a third-grade student at a public school in California, and his mother, who requested the ACLJ’s assistance to ensure that the student may continue to express his religious faith by openly wearing a cross necklace while he is on school grounds. The student often wears a cross necklace to school to symbolize his Christian faith, which has grown especially important to him after he and his siblings survived a dangerous car accident with virtually no physical injuries. O... Continue Reading

2012 Victories: Little Girl can say “God” in School Poem
This is the latest installment in a year-end series looking back at a few of the hundreds of victories by the ACLJ in 2012. Imagine your son or daughter is given an assignment in his or her second grade class, just like thousands of other students around the country, to write a short poem. Your young child decides to write a poem that mentions their love for God, yet their teacher scolds them. That is exactly what happened to one little girl when she wrote, “Love is the earth that God ma... Continue Reading

No Words
There are no words that can adequately convey our sense of sorrow at the horror in Connecticut. We mourn for and with the victims of today’s shooting and pray for the fulfillment of Christ’s promise in the Sermon on the Mount: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” May God bless the parents and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School.... 2012 Victories: Schools Cannot Ban the Bible
This is the latest installment in a year-end series looking back at a few of the hundreds of victories by the ACLJ in 2012. All too often angry atheists and others peddling the false dogma of the so-called “separation of church and state” end up coercing otherwise good intentioned teachers and school principals into to silencing the religious speech of young students. While the Supreme Court has been clear that students do not lose their constitutional rights in a public school sett... Continue Reading

Defending Religious Liberty in California Schools
It’s stunning that in the roughly quarter-century since the Supreme Court began deciding a series of cases that guaranteed Christian groups equal access to schools that some public school districts – indeed some entire states – simply haven’t gotten the message. Yesterday, after months of attempted persuasion, the ACLJ filed suit on behalf of Child Evangelism Fellowship of West Orange County (California) against the Buena Park School District after the School District de...
