Russian Government Begins to Shut Down Innocent Websites
An aggressive push to gain greater control over the Internet and restrict free speech is underway in Russia. Recently, a Russian-led coalition introduced a plan that would give the United Nations (U.N.) vast power to censor, regulate and essentially control the Internet. The U.S. government is strongly opposed to this proposal, as it would violate the very foundation of free speech and undermine the free flow of information and open conversation that the Internet provides. Fierce international ... Continue Reading

Keep the Internet Out of the Hands of the United Nations
The Internet - a global tool in the exchange of information and ideas. Now, the very way that the Internet operates is being threatened by a proposal from Russia - a move that puts the free flow of information and ideas at risk. Russia is pushing for a move that would turn over control of the Internet from a US-based entity to the United Nations. This troubling power play would give unprecedented authority to the UN. Major SCLJ Court Victory for Churches and Rule of Law in Russia
The Slavic Centre for Law and Justice (SCLJ) – the Russian affiliate of the ACLJ – has won a major victory for churches and the rule of law in an area of the world where churches still face heavy regulation from the state. The SCLJ won a case before the Constitutional Court of Russia that will help prevent prosecutors from filing frivolous lawsuits against churches and other citizens. As the SCLJ noted, in Russia, it is critical that “[e]ach action brought against the Church ... Continue Reading

Russian Protesters Organize Online
Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of Moscow in response to the December fourth elections. One of the protests drew a crowd of approximately 100,000 people, the largest since the fall of the Soviet Union over twenty years ago. The protesters believe former President and current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's Party, United Russia, would not have done as well in parliamentary elections if it weren't for vote manipulation. Dissatisfaction with the electoral system is not exactl... Continue Reading
