Russian Government Begins to Shut Down Innocent Websites
An aggressive push to gain greater control over the Internet and restrict free speech is underway in Russia. Recently, a Russian-led coalition introduced a plan that would give the United Nations (U.N.) vast power to censor, regulate and essentially control the Internet. The U.S. government is strongly opposed to this proposal, as it would violate the very foundation of free speech and undermine the free flow of information and open conversation that the Internet provides. Fierce international ... Continue Reading

Keep the Internet Out of the Hands of the United Nations
The Internet - a global tool in the exchange of information and ideas. Now, the very way that the Internet operates is being threatened by a proposal from Russia - a move that puts the free flow of information and ideas at risk. Russia is pushing for a move that would turn over control of the Internet from a US-based entity to the United Nations. This troubling power play would give unprecedented authority to the UN. Such a move would mean only one thing: censorship. And that is simply unaccep... Continue Reading

Congress Starting to Listen on SOPA
By now, you may have noticed many popular websites, including Google and Wikipedia, have launched protests to highlight both the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). We at the ACLJ first brought you the story behind these two bills in November, and we continue to monitor developments. After our legal analysis we found that SOPA raised serious First Amendment concerns. If not properly and narrowly tailored, both bills could impose dangerous restrictions on free speech and... Update on Stop Online Piracy Act
As you know, we've been tracking the progress of the Stop Online Piracy Act, and have expressed serious concerns that it could suppress the free speech and due process rights of Americans. Now, as the House Judiciary Committee prepares to consider the bill this morning, the ACLJ has issued this update on the newest version of the bill here. We are encouraged by the improvements in this latest draft of the bill. However, we remain mindful that we must continue to monitor this legislation as it moves through the legislative process to ensure that the rights of Americans are protected.... Continue Reading

New Internet Legislation Raises Grave First Amendment Concerns
The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) – HR 3261 – while intending to crack down on Internet piracy, could impose dangerous restrictions on free speech. As I previously told you, SOPA would give drastic new authority to the Justice Department to monitor and censor websites. However, the ACLJ’s new legal analysis reveals that this bill, if enacted, would also allow anyone claiming a copyright infringement (regardless if it is true or proven) to silence speech with which they disagree... UPDATE: New Government Attempts to Control and Stifle the Internet
11.16.2011 Update: Earlier today, Congressman Randy Forbes (VA-4) included this statement, attributed to ACLJ Executive Director Jordan Sekulow, in his remarks at the House Judiciary Committee hearing on the "Stop Online Piracy Act (H.R. 3261)." "Online piracy is a real problem, specifically by web sites and actors located overseas. The latest move by Congress to address the problem is the Stop Online Piracy Act (HR 3261). Unfortunately, as drafted, SOPA presents serious free speech and free pr... Continue Reading
