A Good Day for Academic Freedom
Within the past 24 hours, courts from both coasts handed down important rulings in two academic-freedom cases, both times rejecting university efforts to dismiss cases brought by conservative academic critics. The first decision denied the core of the defendants’ motion to dismiss a case brought by Professor James Enstrom, a case I’ve written about before. Enstrom not only blew the whistle on junk science behind recent proposed California diesel emissions restrictions, he discovered... Continue Reading

Counting our Blessings this Thanksgiving
As Americans we have immense freedoms and enjoy great blessings. This year at the ACLJ we have a lot to be thankful for: from Pastor Youcef’s release to children being able to use their Bible in our public schools. Thank you for standing with us in defense of faith and freedom. Here are just a few of the things we can be thankful for this year: Thankful that women can see their baby and make the choice for life. Thankful that churches are free to practice their faith without intr... Continue Reading

Freedom for Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani; Others Still Face Persecution
What an incredible blessing. As you now know, after nearly three years of imprisonment and facing a death sentence, Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani was released by Iranian officials on Saturday. I want to thank all who stood with us in support of Pastor Youcef. More than three million people received a tweet each day for nearly a year, keeping this important case in the spotlight. While our work in this country and abroad focused on securing Pastor Youcef's unconditional release, I was shocked it hap... Continue Reading

Happy Birthday America
July 4, 2012, marks the 236th birthday of the United States of America, created on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall with the signing of the Declaration of Independence by fifty-six of our Founding Fathers. The Fourth of July is traditionally a day for barbeques, going to the beach, parades, baseball games, flag waving, and fireworks. It is a day for us to celebrate America, and rightly so. We are an exceptional country. We should be thankful and proud to be Americans. W... Continue Reading

Defending Those Who Fight for Our Freedom
The brave men and women of our military have dedicated their abilities, and even their very lives, to defending the freedoms that we all enjoy in America. Were it not for their sacrifice, we may not enjoy the freedoms of speech, religion, and economic opportunity that have made America what it is today. As we celebrate those who have dedicated their lives fighting for us, we must never take for granted the freedoms that we enjoy. Even today, we face threats to our religious liberty from our ow... Court Rules Prayer Proclamation Unconstitutional
Just a week after “record turnout” for the National Day of Prayer, as millions joined together in prayer all across America, a state appellate court has declared the proclamation of a day of prayer unconstitutional. The Colorado Court of Appeals has ruled that the Governor’s Colorado Day of Prayer proclamation, which was first issued in 1905, is unconstitutional. The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an atheist group which has sought to stamp out any semblance of our r... Continue Reading

Unity Will Defeat the Attack on Religion in This Country
People of faith across the globe have been under attack for many years. The Obama Administration has ramped up the attack in this country over the past three years. In the face of this increased attack on religion, the United States Catholic Bishops have released a Statement calling for "A Fortnight of Freedom." From June 21 to July 4 of this year, events will be held across the country to highlight the need for all Americans to defend our religious liberty. The obvious impetus for the Bishops... Context Matters with the Camp Pendleton Crosses
The “controversy” over two wooden crosses that stand high atop a hill in the middle of Camp Pendleton must be put into context. And context, especially when the Establishment Clause has been called into question, matters. In 2003, seven Marines made the trek up the steep hill where the crosses now stand and erected a symbol of sacrifice in honor of their comrades who valiantly fought and died for our nation in Iraq. Late last year Marines once again erected a wooden cross to replace... Continue Reading

Student Free Speech Upheld in New York State
We recently helped to ensure that a 7th grade student could continue to pass out religious messages to other students at her public middle school in New York State. The student had notes with encouraging Bible verses delivered to a few other students. The parents of one of the students complained to the Principal, who then informed the student that she could not pass out personalized religious notes in the future. After the student’s mother contacted us, we sent her a letter explaining th... Continue Reading

A Season of Hope
As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ - a season of life - a season of hope - I want to thank all of you for your prayers and support for our work in this country and around the globe. At a time when there is so much turmoil and growing challenges to our faith and freedom, I want to assure you that our commitment to defending faith and freedom has never been stronger. And, with your assistance, we will continue to make a tremendous difference - protecting the rights given to us by Go... Continue Reading
