Angry Atheists, History and America's Future
Millions of Americans know the story of the Ground Zero Cross, the twisted steel beams that fell from the wreckage of the World Trade Center on 9/11, beams in the shape of a cross. Fewer, however, know that this cross is now at a different “Ground Zero” – Ground Zero of an atheist attack on our religious past, and our religious future. Found by excavator Frank Silecchia and consecrated by Father Brian Jordan, a Franciscan Priest, it grew to become a symbol of hope and comfort... Continue Reading

Angry Atheists Lose Fight to Tear Down Ground Zero Cross
“We are angry . . . .” This was the reaction of the president of American Atheists last week upon learning that his organization’s lawsuit to tear down the Ground Zero Cross and remove it from the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum had been thrown out by a federal judge. The news came just as these atheists were holding their annual convention over Easter weekend. The two intersecting steel beams in the shape of a cross was discovered among the wreckage from the devastating t... Continue Reading

A Victory for Common Sense: New York Judge Rules for Ground Zero Cross
Easter weekend brought us two pieces of very good legal news. The first -- yet another victory against Obamacare’s abortion-pill mandate -- Ed White posted about late Friday night. The second, however, went largely unnoticed in the media until this morning. A New York federal judge ruled resoundingly that the Ground Zero Cross’s presence in the 9/11 Museum did not violate the Establishment Clause. The ruling is a victory for history and for common sense. The history here is bey... Continue Reading

Defending Middle School Student’s Right to Openly Wear a Rosary
We recently assisted a middle school student in Texas, and his mother, who requested our help to ensure that the student is able to keep openly wearing his rosary while he is at school. The student has worn a rosary to school to symbolize and express his Christian faith, which has grown especially important to him during his continuing fight against cancer that has appeared in his throat and lungs. On multiple occasions, however, teachers and administrators told him to remove or hide his rosary... Continue Reading

Protecting Third-Grader’s Right to Wear a Cross Necklace
We recently assisted a third-grade student at a public school in California, and his mother, who requested the ACLJ’s assistance to ensure that the student may continue to express his religious faith by openly wearing a cross necklace while he is on school grounds. The student often wears a cross necklace to school to symbolize his Christian faith, which has grown especially important to him after he and his siblings survived a dangerous car accident with virtually no physical injuries. O... Continue Reading

Mojave Desert Cross Rededicated on Veterans Day
A historic war memorial known as the Mojave Desert Cross was returned to its rightful place in a fitting Veterans Day ceremony at Sunrise Rock. The nearly 80-year-old war memorial cross had been at the center of a decade-long legal battle as the ACLU sought to have it removed from what was then federal land. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, and the high Court overturned a lower court ruling which had held the cross unconstitutional. Earlier this year, a settlement was reached tr... Atheism on the Rise as Groups Seek to Censor Faith
A new poll, “The Global Index of Religiosity and Atheism,” shows that atheism is on the rise in America. Since 2005, the number of Americans claiming to be atheists has risen from 1% to 5% of the U.S. population. The disturbing trend continues as the number of people claiming they are “religious” has also fallen over the same seven-year period from 73% to now just 60% of America. It is interesting to note that in the worldwide survey, the country with the largest atheis... Continue Reading

ACLJ & 190K Americans to Court: Dismiss Atheist Suit Against Ground Zero Cross
The response has been overwhelming. We have heard from more than 190,000 Americans - including more than 150,000 online - who understand that a cross memorial at Ground Zero is a symbol of hope - a symbol that is a constitutional and appropriate exhibit at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. Today we filed our amicus brief backing the Ground Zero cross and urging a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by American Atheists - legal arguments that are both offensi... Continue Reading

Despite Atheists’ Absurd Claims, Ground Zero Cross does not Violate the Constitution
For more than a decade, the Ground Zero Cross has stood as a symbol of hope, found rising out of the rubble at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the worst terrorist attack in our nation’s history. Yet, the American Atheists actually argue in federal court that the mere “existence of the cross” is causing them “depression, headaches, anxiety, and mental pain and anguish.” The cross exists because it is was what was left of the remains of the World Trade Center after ... Defend Ground Zero Cross From Atheist Assault
The legal argument is absurd. American Atheists, which has filed a lawsuit to remove a cross from the new museum at Ground Zero, is making some astonishing claims. The atheists say they are suffering both physical and emotional damages from the existence of the cross. That's right. The mere existence of this memorial has brought on headaches, indigestion, even mental pain. They even make a bizarre suggestion about erecting a "17-foot-high A for Atheists" to promote their non-beliefs at the site... Continue Reading
