Context Matters with the Camp Pendleton Crosses
The “controversy” over two wooden crosses that stand high atop a hill in the middle of Camp Pendleton must be put into context. And context, especially when the Establishment Clause has been called into question, matters. In 2003, seven Marines made the trek up the steep hill where the crosses now stand and erected a symbol of sacrifice in honor of their comrades who valiantly fought and died for our nation in Iraq. Late last year Marines once again erected a wooden cross to replace... Continue Reading

Decision Expected Soon on Camp Pendleton Memorial Cross
Fox News is reporting that in the coming days the Commandant of the Marines is expected to make a decision on whether to allow a tribute to heroes who gave their lives fighting for our nation to stand. Again, no such liberty exi... Continue Reading

USMC Camp Pendleton: Keep the Cross
On Veterans Day, a 13-foot cross was placed on top of a hill at Camp Pendleton in California. The Marines who put it there said they wanted to honor the memory of four comrades killed in Iraq and wanted to show respect for all military personnel who serve abroad. The Marines were actually replacing a cross originally erected in 2003, but that subsequently burned down in 2007. The four Marines honored helped raise the original cross in 2003. Staff Sgt. Justin Rettenberger said the cross is dedic... Continue Reading
